7 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca ABRAHAM, Omar WWII Omar was born in Lebanon in 1926. He joined the Canadian Light Infantry and served in Canada. He passed away in 2005 and had been a member of Branch #90 Fort Garry of The Royal Canadian Legion for fifty-five years. ADAMS, Leslie WWII Leslie was born to Joseph and Harriet Adams in Selkirk, Manitoba on December 21, 1905. He joined the Saskatoon Light Infantry, Winnipeg Rifles, and lost his arm in Ortona, Italy when his machine gun nest was hit by mortar on December 9, 1943. It was hard getting used to his arm prosthesis but there were no obstacles he couldn’t overcome and he always set out to do anything other individuals could do. He and his wife, Olive Blanche Adams, had four children, Carol, Leslie, Larry and Dennis. Leslie passed away on April 28, 1974 and had been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Selkirk Branch #42 for twenty-nine years. AGNEW, Bruce W. WWII Bruce was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1924 and joined The Royal Canadian Air Force as an airframe mechanic. He served in Canada, Alaska, Britain and Northwest Europe. Before D-Day, Bruce went to Ayr, Scotland to qualify on Hawker Typhoons and after D-Day, he went to France where he was injured. He was later released from the RCAF Burn Ward and came home in 1945. In 1946, Bruce served on P51 Mustangs in Montreal and in Rivers, Manitoba. He had been a forty-year member of the Fort Garry Branch #90 of The Royal Canadian Legion when he passed away in 2006. AGERBAK, Tage G. WWII Tage was born in Denmark in 1915 and immigrated to Canada with his family in December 1927. He married and had a son. He joined the Winnipeg Grenadiers, Royal Canadian Infantry Corps, with his two brothers, Buster and Ken. After serving guard duty in Jamaica and Bermuda, the Grenadiers were shipped to Hong Kong in the fall of 1941 and were involved in heavy fighting when the Japanese invaded on December 7, 1941. He was severely injured on December 20, 1941 in an explosion in his pill box and he, along with several other badly injured men, was left behind during the retreat. They were never seen again. Agerbak Lake in Northern Manitoba is named after him.

WWII Wes was born in Hartney, Manitoba in 1921 and joined the Air Force as a flight instructor, serving in Canada. He passed away in 2000 and was a Life Member of the Hartney Branch #26 of The Royal Canadian Legion. No additional information is available. AHERNE, Edward P. WWII Edward was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1918 and joined the 48 Highlanders, Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps # 5 General, serving in Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy and Northwest Europe. He passed away in 1993 and had been a member of the Fort Garry Branch #90 of The Royal Canadian Legion for thirty-one years. ALLAN, Ronald H. KOREA & PEACETIME Allan was born in Barrie, Ontario in 1931 and joined the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps, serving in Canada and Korea. He passed away in 1957 and had been a member of the Fort Garry Branch #90 of The Royal Canadian Legion for fifteen years. ALCOCK, Arthur F. WWII Arthur was born in Souris, Manitoba on October 2, 1919 and enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on May 9, 1941 as a wireless air gunner. He received his training at MacDonald and Winnipeg and was sent to Vancouver where he was engaged in guard duty before going overseas. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Alcock were notified that their son had been killed in active service on June 17, 1942. Arthur is buried at the Evesham Cemetery, Worcestershire England.

WWII & KOREA & PEACETIME Wilbert was born in Fraserville, Nova Scotia in 1921 and enlisted in the Army with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in 1943. He served overseas until 1945, in Korea in 1950 and did UN peacekeeping in Egypt from 1963-64. He received many medals in his career before retiring in Winnipeg in 1970 as a Master Warrant Officer. He taught mechanics until he retired in 1985 and moved with his wife to Calgary, Alberta in 1986. Wilbert passed away in 2007. ANDERSON, Alexander C. WWII Alexander was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1923. He joined the Navy and served as a leading seaman torpedo man on the HMCS Courtenay, HMCS Pound Maker, and HMCS Miramichi. He was part of the G8 group convoy sailing from St. John’s to Londonderry, Ireland. During his time in the war, he served on the High Seas, England and Canada. Alexander was a legion member for thirty years and a Life Member of The RCL Winnipeg Beach # 61 for fifteen years, serving on the Executive as Treasurer and President till his death on June 2, 2010. ANGUS, James I. WWII Angus was born in Silver Creek, Manitoba in 1913 and enlisted in Winnipeg in April 1940 with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders. He was discharged there in September 1945 after having served in Canada, England and Northwest Europe. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the 1939-1945 War Medal. Angus passed away in 1991. ANGERS, Eldon WWII Eldon was born in Miami, Manitoba in 1924 and in 1943, joined the Royal Signal Corps in Vancouver, BC. He served in England and Continental Europe and was at Juno Beach on D-Day. As a Signalman, he rode high powered motorcycles over difficult terrain and fought in the battle of Caen. Wounded in action on July 18, 1944, he was medically discharged and received his Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp in Winnipeg on August 24, 1945. He married Velma Martindale and they lived in Morden, Miami, Winnipeg, Flin Flon, Lynn Lake, the Pas and Brandon where Eldon was a member of the RCL Brandon Branch #3 for fourteen years until he died in 1974.

She joined the Canadian Women’s Army Corps, # 110 Depot Company and served in Canada. No additional information is available. ARDAGH, William J. WWII William was born in Wawanesa, Manitoba in 1914. He joined the 3rd Division Royal Canadian Artillery Light Anti-Aircraft Division as a gunner and served in England, France, Belgium, Germany and Holland. He passed away in 2001 and was a Life Member of the Hartney Branch #26 of The Royal Canadian Legion. ARSENAULT, Arthur J. WWII Arthur was born in Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba on July 3, 1921 to Albert and Olive Arsenault. He enlisted in the Canadian Army at District Depot # 10 in Winnipeg on January 22, 1943 and was transferred to the 100th Canadian Army Basic Training Centre at Portage la Prairie, then to Camp Borden. Due to the dire need for help at home, he was granted compassionate leave from August 23 to October 3, 1943 and additional leaves took him to full discharge on September 13, 1945. Art received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the 1939-1945 War Medal and was a member of RCL Lac du Bonnet Branch 164 for fourteen years when he passed away in 2005. ARSENAULT, Albert WWII Albert was born in Bloomfield, Prince Edward Island on January 8, 1893. After the turn of the century, he migrated west to Manitoba where he lived most of his life in the Lac du Bonnet area. During the War of 1914-18, he enlisted as a Private into the Royal Winnipeg Rifles and the Canadian Army Medical Corps. After basic training, he was posted to England where he met Mary Olive Ford, whom he later married at the Magdalene Church, Sea Road in the County of Sussex, England. Their two sons and daughter joined the Canadian Forces in WWII. Albert died on January 21, 1974 and had been a member of RCL Lac du Bonnet Branch #164.

15 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca ARSENAULT, Hubert J. WWII Hubert was born on July 4, 1920 in Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba. After mining in Northern Manitoba, he enlisted as a Private with the Royal Canadian Engineers in Winnipeg in 1942 and trained in Chilliwack, BC. His unit was later stationed in Blaenavon, Wales to look for new sources of coal for the war effort. On January 6, 1943, Hubert transferred to the Royal Canadian Regiment and went to the Adriatic Front and within a year was a prisoner of war. Released in 1945, he recuperated in England, was discharged in Canada in October of that year and was awarded three medals, two stars and a bar for service. Hubert was with RCL Nutana Branch #362 and passed away on September 2, 1995. ARSENAULT (nee FOUNTAIN), Marie WWII Marie was born in Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba on September 16, 1922. She enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps in September 1942 and was posted to Vermillion, Alberta for basic training, later transferring to Red Deer, Alberta for driver training. From Vancouver, BC, she went on to Camp Borden in June of 1943 where she trained on a variety of vehicles, from two-ton trucks to staff cars. There, Marie was in charge of delivery of rations, hospital provisions, Sergeants’ Mess supplies and doing duty on Provo Patrol into neighbouring towns to reclaim errant personnel. She received two medals and was discharged at Long Branch, Ontario on February 14, 1946. ASPLUND, Melford WWII Melford was born in Fort Frances in 1927 and trained in Canada until his discharge at the end of the war. He passed away in 2002. No additional information is available. ASHLEY, Jack R. WWII Jack was born in Durham, Ontario in 1921. He joined the Canadian Infantry and transferred to the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion, qualifying as a Paratrooper in Canada. He then took paratrooper training in England, qualifying to wear the British Paratrooper Wings before transferring to the joint US/Canada Special Service Force for paratrooper training, again qualifying to wear the US Paratrooper Wings. Jack was severely injured in Montana and was declared unfit for overseas service. He spent the rest of the war training paratroopers at Camp Shilo, MB where he met and married Blossom Nichol from the Canadian Women’s Army Corps. Jack had been a member of RCL The Pas Branch #19 for fifty years when he died in 2006.
