WWII Peter was born in Neepawa, Manitoba in 1926 and joined the Navy in the spring of 1944 before his 18th birthday. He trained for a variety of duties, including sonar submarine detection, and served on ships assigned to protect the convoys travelling to and from England. He became a part of history when his ship, along with three others, recorded the first capture of a German submarine. When Peter passed away in 2010, he had been a member of the Portage la Prairie Branch #65 of The Royal Canadian Legion for twenty-eight years. DICKSON, Delmar B. WWII Delmar was born in Boissevain, Manitoba in 1923 and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942. He trained as a wireless air gunner and after graduating, spent a number of months on staff at a Navigational Training School, flying with the trainees. He served overseas in Ireland and England and at the end of the war, was with the # 408 Squadron. He volunteered for the Pacific but that war ended before his crew left Canada. DIXON, Robert Edmond WWII Robert was born in Souris, Manitoba on September 5, 1916. He was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. David Dixon and was the third to enlist in the services in WWII. Robert enlisted in the RCAF on July 24, 1941 in Winnipeg, MB and trained as an armourer in Manitoba, Saskatoon, SK, Trenton, ON and Vancouver, BC. He served in England from March 1943 to June 1945 as a Leading Aircraftman and was discharged on September 3, 1945 at Moncton, NB. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and the Defence Medal. Robert died on March 26, 1988 in Minnedosa, MB. He had been a member of RCL Souris Branch #60 for forty years. DIXON, Gavin H. WWII Gavin was born in Souris, Manitoba in 1913 and enlisted in the Army in August 1942, training in Brampton, Petawawa and Barrie. From March 1943, he served overseas as a gunner in the Royal Canadian Artillery, 1st Infantry Division, 2nd Field Regiment, 7th Battery and was involved in the 20-month Mediterranean campaign through Algiers, Sicily, Ortona and Cassino, Italy where he fought at Monastery Hill and on the Hitler and Gothic Lines in May and August 1944. In October, his Battery supported the British 46th Division in northern Italy and by March 1945, he went to Marseilles, France then to Utrecht where German POWs were being held. Gavin died in 2001 and was a member of RCL General Hugh Dyer Branch for fifty-three years.
