105 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca HAYWARD, Bernard W. WWII Bernard was born on March 2, 1912 in Raymore, Saskatchewan. He joined the Royal Air Force, 51 Squadron RAF, in 1936 and trained as a navigator and pilot of various types of airplanes. On April 4, 1940, Bernard was shot down over Denmark and was a POW at Stalag Luft III where he twice tried to escape. In January 1945, German authorities evacuated POW camps and the Long March began. Bernard was liberated in April 1945 and repatriated to Canada. He received the 1939-1945 Star, the Air Crew Europe Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Overseas Bar, the War Medal 1939-45, the Oak Leaf (Mentioned in Dispatches twice) and Her Majesty’s Armed Services Veterans Badge. Bernard died November 3, 2007 in Dugald, Manitoba. HAYWARD, Victor W. WWII Victor was born in Gladstone, Manitoba on June 2, 1924 and joined the Winnipeg Rifles, serving in England and Italy. Wounded with wounds shot through both elbows, he was invalided out of the Rifles and then trained in Old MB Institute of Mechanics. He worked as a mechanic and salesman and retired in 1981. Victor was a resident of Gladstone when he passed away on December 17, 1997. HEAPE, William B. WWII William was born in Hartney, Manitoba in 1922 and joined the D-Company, 48th Highlanders of Canada, serving in Italy and the Mediterranean. He passed away in 2007 and was a Life Member of the Hartney Branch #26 of The Royal Canadian Legion for sixty years. HAZLEHURST, Alfred J. WWII Alfred was born in the United Kingdom in 1921. In Winnipeg, he enlisted with the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps in February, 1941. He was discharged there in 1946 after having served in Canada, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the 193945 Star and the France and Germany Star. Alfred passed away in 1963.
