WWII Russell was born on the family farm in Manitoba on April 16, 1919 and joined the Royal Canadian Artillery, 59th Battery, 21st Field Regiment at Portage la Prairie, MB on April 1, 1941. After basic training, he was sent to Port Alberni, BC and then to Quebec. He arrived in England on September 14, 1943 and was transferred to the 17th Field Regiment, 5th Armoured Division, then shipped to Salerno, Italy in November. Russell also saw action in France, Belgium and Holland before returning to Grandview on January 18, 1946. He passed away on July 16, 1991 at seventy-two and is buried at Grandview Memorial Gardens. Russell had been a member of RCL Grandview Branch #14 for forty-five years. HIGGERTY, Frederick C. WWI Frederick was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1893, one of four children. His father passed away at a young age and Fred was raised by his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. J.P. McKibbin from Cartwright, Manitoba. He joined the Canadian Army in 1915, went overseas and later joined the British Army as a 2nd Lieutenant, as Britain was short of junior officers. Fred was killed in action on November 30, 1917 and has no known grave but his name is inscribed on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, France. HOLDEN, Elwood Lawrence WWII Elwood was born in Piney, Manitoba on August 16, 1921 and joined the military in 1940. He trained in BC then was shipped to England and Sicily, Italy as a Corporal, serving with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. Elwood fought in Italy with the West Nova Scotia Regiment for two years before returning to England in April of 1945. After the war, Elwood stayed in London at the Canadian Military Headquarters, repatriating the Canadian Forces. In the spring of 1946, he returned to Manitoba where he and his English bride, Eileen, spent fifty-nine years raising their family. Elwood died on February 22, 2005 at eighty-three and was very proud of his military service. HILL, Orval I. PEACETIME Orval was born in Tisdale, Saskatchewan in 1935. He joined the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps and served in Canada. Orval had been a member of the Fort Garry Branch #90 of The Royal Canadian Legion for forty-eight years when he passed away in 2006.
