23 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca BERTRAND, Albert WWI Albert joined the 10th Field Company, 4th Division of the Canadian Engineers, serving in Vimy, Ypres, Courcelette, Passchendaele, Regina Trench, Amiens and Mons. He received the Military Medal with two bars. No additional information is available. BIRD, Frank G. WWI Frank was born in Huntington, England in 1894. He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1914 with the 179th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders of Canada. He served in Belgium and was wounded in Cambrai, France in 1918, returning to Canada in 1919. After the war, he farmed in the Dropmore area for a number of years and he and his wife, Doris, raised twelve children. They moved to Neepawa, then to Newdale and retired in Brandon. He was a member of RCL Wheat City Branch #247 for ten years. Frank died in 1983 at the age of eighty-nine. BOHN, Reinhold WWII Reinhold was born in Greenridge, Manitoba in 1915 and enlisted there with the Royal Canadian Artillery, 44th A/A Battery on December 14, 1942. He was a trained soldier, a gunner on heavy anti-aircraft for 12 months, a member of a predictor crew for 7 months, a driver for 4 months, a combat infantryman for 9 months and was with the regimental police for 3 months. He served with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles and St. John Fusiliers in the UK and in Northwest Europe for six months and was honourably discharged on March 20, 1946 in Winnipeg. He received the France and Germany Star and the War Medal 1939-45. Reinhold died in 1974 and was a member of RCL Roseau Valley Branch #160 for sixteen years. BISSETT, Jack M. WWII Jack was born in 1920 and joined the No. 78 Air Force Squadron, serving in Germany and England. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal on May 14, 1943 for showing the greatest determination throughout his tour in the course of which he flew in some of the most heavily defended areas in Germany. He was killed in action on March 31, 1944 at age 23 and is buried in the Rheinberg War Cemetery in Germany. Bissett in Manitoba is named after him.
