119 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca JOHNSON, Frederick G. WWII Frederick was born in Govan, Saskatchewan in 1920. On September 18th, 1939, he joined the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery at McGregor Armory in Winnipeg then was sent to England for Christmas. When hostilities started in Italy, he was sent there then was transferred from Artillery to the Provost Corps 101 Traffic Control. Fred fought in England, Italy, France, Holland and Belgium before returning home to be discharged on February 15th, 1946. He then joined the Reserve Provost Corps and was a Master Warrant Officer when he retired at the age of 46. Fred has been a Life Member of the Ukrainian Canadian Veteran’s Legion Branch #141 for thirty-eight years. JOHNSON, John Henry WWII John, son of Joseph Henderson and Ellen Johnson, was born in Woodmore, Manitoba on May 16, 1923. He enlisted with the Active Army trainees on January 13, 1943 and subsequently joined the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light infantry. He transferred to the First Canadian Scottish Regiment, serving overseas from December 3, 1942. Henry was killed in action in France on July 30, 1944 at age 21 and is buried in Bretteville-sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery, between Caen and Falaise, France. His father had served in WWI. JOHNSTON, James Wesley PEACETIME James was born in Dauphin, Manitoba in 1930. He farmed before joining the Royal Canadian Army, Royal Canadian Signals in 1954, serving in Canada. After twelve years in the Army, James operated a service station, then worked in retail sales and served as Acting Captain for the local Air Force Reserves. James and his wife, Jeanne (Cleaver), raised two sons and two daughters and reside in Dauphin. JOHNSON, Joseph H. WWI Joseph, son of John Lee and Margaret Hanna Johnson (nee Henderson), was born on June 24, 1888 in Newcastle, England and came to Canada when he was six weeks old. Joseph joined the Army in 1917, at age of 29, and following the war, married Ellen Pott in the RM of Franklin on June 24, 1920. They raised two children, Margaret Emily Pearl and John Henry. In 1927, he gave up farming and moved his family to Winnipeg where they lived in East Kildonan. Joe passed away in 1944, just weeks after his son Henry was killed in France in WWII.
