(Buzzie) WWII Lawrence was born in Rainy River, Ontario on February 17, 1923 to Winlow and Dora Miniely. He enlisted at nineteen with the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve and from January 1943, trained as a wireless radio operator in Winnipeg, Rivers and Portage la Prairie, MB. He served on HMCS Waskesiu in Halifax and on the HMCS Magog in the North Atlantic, escorting convoys. On October 14, 1944, the Magog was torpedoed by an enemy U-Boat in the St Lawrence River and three seamen were killed. Discharged in Winnipeg in September 1945, Lawrence married Margaret (Peggy) in July 1949, worked for Canada Customs and then retired in 1977. He has been a member of the Major Hughes Branch #54 for fifty-five years. MOIR, Harvey R. PEACETIME Harvey was born in Hartney, Manitoba on April 8, 1928. He joined the Navy in Winnipeg on August 12, 1946 and for the next twenty-four years, served on HMCS Uganda, Rockcliffe, Sault Ste. Marie, New Glasgow, New Waterford, New Glasgow, Saguenay and Saskatchewan and ashore, at HMCS Naden, Malahat, Nonsuch, Donnacona, Andergrove and Chippawa until September 16, 1970, the date of his discharge. He was a Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class. MOORE, A. Clark WWI Clark, son of Fred Moore and Annie Laurie Clark, was born in Cartwright, Manitoba in 1896. At seventeen, he enlisted with the 27th Battalion in Winnipeg and served overseas for almost five years. Clark suffered from shell shock which affected his writing. Back home, Clark took up farming with his parents and received some land through the Soldier Settlement Board. He was very interested in community activities and was a very good ball player. He married Dorothy Ashew in 1928 and had three girls. Clark passed away in 1949 and is buried in the Cartwright Cemetery. Until his death at fifty-three, Clark had been a Charter Member of RCL Cartwright-Mather Branch #86. MOONEY, William Verne WWII Verne was born in Cartwright, Manitoba in 1921. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1943 and trained in Brandon, Yorkton, Edmonton, Vulcan and Moncton. Because he had once been hospitalized with bronchial-pneumonia, he did not arrive in England until April, 1945. He returned home and was discharged in 1946. In 1951, he became manager of the Federal Grain Elevator then Purchasing Agent at the Winnipeg Office. In 1972, he joined the Pioneer Grain Company in the same capacity and remained there until his retirement in 1984. Verne and his wife, Ruth (Lowe) retired to Cartwright in 1988 and had two children. He had been a Past President and member of RCL Cartwright-Mather Branch #86 for fiftyseven years.
