WWII Arthur was born in Boissevain, Manitoba in 1926 and joined the Active Army in September 1944, taking his basic training at Osborne Barracks and advanced training at Camp Shilo before going to Europe. There were six soldiers under the age of 19 who were sent to Ontario for a driver mechanic course and then back to Shilo for advanced training. Arthur signed up for the Pacific War and had embarkation leave the same weekend the two atomic bombs were dropped on Japan. He would have gone on to train in Kentucky. Arthur was discharged in May of 1946 and has been a member of the Hamiota Branch #174 of The Royal Canadian Legion for fifty-nine years. OIEN, Kenneth A. WWII Kenneth was born in Stratton, Ontario in 1919 and joined the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps, serving in the United Kingdom, Central Mediterranean and Continental Europe. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the 1939-45 Star, the Italy Star and the France and Germany Star. Kenneth passed away in 2005 and was a Life Member and past president of the Gen Lipsett Branch #99 of The Royal Canadian Legion. PARSONS, William S. PEACETIME William was born in Deloraine, Manitoba on August 6, 1937 and went to school in Napinka, Manitoba. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1954 and served at supply depots and headquarters in Moncton, New Brunswick, Edmonton, Alberta and Ottawa, Ontario. He received the Canadian Decoration and was promoted to Corporal, then to Sergeant before retiring in August 1971. William has been a member of the Ottawa and Hartney Branches of The Royal Canadian Legion for eighteen years. PAPINEAU, René Stanislas WWII René was born in St. George, Manitoba in 1923. He enlisted with the Canadian Army in Port Arthur in 1941, left for England in August 1942 and was with the 52nd Battalion of the Lake Superior Regiment in Europe. René was not seriously wounded when the truck he was driving hit a line mine but two guards were killed. He also later guarded the infamous S.S. General Kurt Meyers before his trial for war crimes. Back in Canada in 1946, he was discharged, returned to St. George and married Annette Coulombe in 1947. He received the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the War Medal 193945 and the Normandy Medal. René died on December 27, 2004.
