WWII Albert was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1919 and enlisted in the Army on October 20, 1941, training in SK and BC. In December, Albert left Winnipeg for Halifax then embarked for England where he trained building bridges. In France in July 1944, the company rebuilt bridges blown up by the Germans as they retreated. In Holland, British and American paratroopers landed on the enemy side, where the 20th Field was situated. After the war, Albert stayed with the Army of Occupation in Germany until early 1946 when he fell ill and was hospitalized in England then sent home to Winnipeg and discharged in May of that year. Albert had been a member of RCL Gladstone Branch #110 for thirty-five years when he passed away in 1985. COSTELLA (nee REESE), Annie Maud WWII Annie was born in Gladstone, Manitoba in 1919 and enlisted with the Canadian Women’s Army Corps. She was head waitress in the Officer’s Mess before taking a nursing course at Camp Borden and then began nursing in a Shilo Hospital. At the end of the war, she entered St. Boniface Hospital to do her Lab degree then worked at a Winnipeg clinic and later at Victoria Hospital. Annie married William Reese in 1955 and they both belonged to the Fort Rouge Legion Branch #97, she being a member for forty-nine years. Annie passed away on February 2, 1994. COTTOM, Clarence H. KOREA & PEACETIME Clarence was born in Chapleau, Ontario on October 11, 1927 and joined the Army in Calgary, AB on December 20, 1950. He was honourably discharged in Calgary on January 10, 1954, then served with the Royal Canadian Air Force as Cook 3 and was again honourably discharged on February 16, 1965. Clarence also served with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in Korea and on SS Warrior Texaco, Laval Dock Patterson. After his discharge, he worked for Chicken Delight in Sudbury, Ontario. He’s been a member of the Russell Branch #159 of Royal Canadian Legion for forty-six years. COSTELLO, Howard James WWII Howard was born on September 19, 1921 and enlisted in the Army in Winnipeg, MB on September 15, 1942. He served in England in the same unit where his brother, Lorne, was stationed as well as in France, Belgium, Germany and Holland, where he participated in its liberation. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the 1939-1945 Star, the France and Germany Star and the Defence Medal. Howard was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Fort Frances Branch #29 before he passed away on May 30, 2010. He is buried in the veteran’s plot in Fort Frances, Ontario.
