He joined the 222nd Battalion in December 1915 and transferred to the 128th Battalion as a Bugler, serving in England. No more information is available. PITRE, Elmer G. WWII Elmer was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1923 and joined the Canadian Armoured Corps, 20th Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers, in December 1942. Elmer trained as a gunner in Manitoba and at Camp Borden, ON before sailing to the UK on July 16th, 1943. He served in Canada, England and Europe and spent 30 out of his 39 months overseas taking part in the heavy campaign through the Low Countries, including the battles of Arnhem and Nijmegen in Holland. Sapper Pitre was discharged March 25th and received the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and the 1939-45 War Medal. Elmer died July 19, 2002. PITRE, Oliver E. WWII Oliver was born in Winnipeg on June 23, 1921. With his brother, Elmer, he enlisted as a gunner in the Canadian Armoured Corps on December 1st, 1942. But at home, there remained two siblings (the oldest fifteen) and a father incapable of operating machinery, making it difficult to operate a farm. A straw pull delivered Oliver home on compassionate leave and Elmer to war. Several furloughs later, Oliver was completely discharged for the duration of the war, destined by chance to serve his country in this way, frustrated as he felt he should be with his brothers. Oliver is remembered for his contribution to the war effort in this way. He died September 5th, 2006. PITRE, Joseph C. WWII Joe was born in Makinak, Manitoba in 1912 and joined the Canadian Army, 20th Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers in Winnipeg on December 16th, 1941. Recruited a Sapper, he was part instructor-tradesman in Canada before sailing to the UK on July 16th on the same ship as his brother Joe. After D-Day, he fought through France, Belgium, Germany and in the battles of Arnhem and Nijmegen in Holland. After the war, Joe returned to Canada and his English war bride, Betty Pitre (Clark), followed later. Discharged a Sergeant in Winnipeg on May 12th, 1946, Joe received the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Medal, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and the 193545 War Medal. He died December 27th, 1986.
