85 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca GABEL, William (Butch) KOREA William was born in Hartney, Manitoba on December 28, 1930 and joined the Royal Canadian Navy as a stoker on November 4, 1948. He was drafted to HMCS Athabaskan in June 1949 and sailed for Korea on July 5, 1950, arriving on July 30 of that year. Butch spent ten months overseas and arrived back in Esquimalt, British Columbia in May 1951 after spending twenty-six months in the Navy. GADBOIS, Joseph-Louis A. WWII Joseph-Louis was born in Montreal, Quebec in 1922 and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Leading Aircraftman, serving in Canada. He passed away in 1987 and was a Life Member of the Robert Frost Branch #133 of The Royal Canadian Legion for sixteen years. GAINER, William E. WWI William was born on June 26, 1884 in Arnaud, Manitoba. He joined the Army and was stationed at Shornecliffe, England on May 10, 1918 and later served in Italy. On his discharge, he suffered from very bad shell shock. He passed away in January of 1969. GAGNON, Claude G.R. SPECIAL AREA DUTY Claude was born in St. Boniface, Manitoba on November 17, 1949. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces on December 5, 1966 in Winnipeg, MB, Fort Osborne Barracks then reported to Calgary. The Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada was his home until April 1967. From April to August of that year, he attended the Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering, CFB Chilliwack, BC at the Field Engineer Training School. After his transfer to Germany, 1st Division BOAR, Fort Victoria, the Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group was formed in 1971 and he moved to Lahr, Germany. He was also at Val Cartier, QC from 1973-1976 and again in Germany from 1976-1980. Back in Canada in 1980, Claude was sent to training school in Chilliwack.
