173 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca PITTS, Peter WWII Peter enlisted in Brandon in July 1941 with the 70 Light Anti-Aircraft, Lake Superior Regiment, and was discharged in Winnipeg in January 1946 after having served in Canada, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the Defence Medal, the 1939-45 Star and the France and Germany Star. Peter passed away in 2001. PKYERMAN, Mable C. WWII Mable was born in Saskatchewan in 1918. She joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in Halifax and served in Canada. She’s been a member of Ontario’s Kenora Branch #12 of The Royal Canadian Legion for thirty-nine years. POHL, Vernon V. WWII Vernon was born in Gladstone, Manitoba in 1924. He joined the 3rd Division, Royal Canadian Army Service Corps when he was 17 and was discharged in 1946. After the war, Vernon returned to Canada with his English bride, Mavis Butler, whom he’d married in 1945. Raising five children, they lived on farmland near Gladstone until the oldest was of school age then Vern sold the farm and they moved to Gladstone where he first worked as a school caretaker then in carpentry. He received the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. Vernon had been a member of RCL Gladstone Branch #110 for fifty years when he passed away in 2008. PLOMP, Fred W. WWII Fred was born in La Rivière, Manitoba in 1916 and joined the Lord Strathcona Horse Regiment, serving in Canada, England and Italy. He passed away in 1979 and had been a member of the Dryden Branch #63 of The Royal Canadian Legion for many years.
