WWII Edward was born in Pilot Mound, Manitoba in 1917 and joined the # 428 Halifax Squadron of the Air Force, serving in England. He was killed in action on September 27, 1943 and is commemorated in the Hanover War Cemetery in Germany. MacMurchy Lake was named after him in 1995. MARCHUK, Alexander J. Jr. WWII Alexander, son of Alexander and Mary Marchuk, was born in Sleeman, Ontario on October 15, 1919. On July 10, 1940 at the age of twenty-one, he enlisted in the Army at Fort Frances, ON with the 17th Field Regiment, 37th Battery, 5thArmoured Division. He served in Canada, England, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was awarded the Military Medal at Montemaggiore (Death Valley) in Italy for courage and devotion to duty, giving first aid, evacuating the wounded then returning to his post despite heavy shelling. He was discharged in Winnipeg in the fall of 1945 then worked in technical areas of commercial industry, retiring in the late 1960s. Alexander passed away on June 22, 1997 at seventy-eight. MARTIN, Edwin WWII Edwin was born in Victoria Beach, Manitoba on November 7, 1920 and enlisted in the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in Winnipeg. He trained in Manitoba then in Trenton, ON and later took part in the Allied Campaign through France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. Discharged on March 12, 1946, he spent the next two years in the Ninette Sanatorium for TB after which Ed married Lillian Gibson. They had two children. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the 1939-45 Star, the War Medal and the General Service Badge. Edwin had been with RCL Victoria Beach Branch #96 for fifty-four years when he died on April 9, 2000. MARCHUK, Stephen WWII Stephen, son of Alexander and Mary Marchuk, was born in Sleeman, Ontario on August 22, 1918. On July 10, 1940 at the age of twenty-two, he enlisted with the 17th Field Regiment, 37th Field Battery of the Royal Canadian Artillery in Fort Frances then was stationed at Camp Borden, ON. On June 26, 1941, while waiting with his regiment to go overseas via Nova Scotia, he was seriously injured when the army vehicle he was in went over an embankment in Mira Gut, Cape Breton. He passed away a day later in the military hospital in Sydney, NS. He was twenty-three. Stephen is buried at Rainy River, ON. He received the 1939-45 Star and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal.
