He joined the Winnipeg Grenadiers and served in Jamaica and Hong Kong where he was captured and spent the remainder of the war as a POW. He married Mary Dix in 1949 and they had one daughter, Beverley. He worked for the Manitoba Government, the Department of Mines and Natural Resources and was supervisor of the Crown Land Records until he retired. John was devoted to his family and friends, especially enjoying his time with his fellow Hong Kong Veterans who honoured him with the Memorial Wall unveiled in Ottawa in 2009. John died in 2002 and had been a member of RCL Winnipeg Branch 1 for thirty-four years. POWELL, John H. WWII John was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1923 and joined the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve as a telegrapher and served in Canada, England and the High Seas. John passed away in 1994 and had been a member of the Fort Garry Branch #90 of Royal Canadian Legion for thirty-six years. PURKIS, Alfred WWI Alfred was born in England. He joined the 79th Battalion and was drafted in the 43rd Cameron Highlanders, serving at Ypres, Hill 60 and the Somme where he was wounded and ruled unfit for service. Alfred returned to Canada on January 18, 1918. PRUDEN, John R. WWII John was born in Manitoba in 1923 and joined the 15th Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery, and served in Canada, England, France and Germany. John passed away in 1998 and had been a member of the Fort Garry Branch #90 of The Royal Canadian Legion for twenty-five years.
