WWII Allan was born in Beaver, Manitoba in 1917 and enlisted in 1941 with the Fort Garry Horse Armoured Regiment in Winnipeg. He served in Canada, Britain and Northwest Europe. On D-Day, he landed on the beach in Normandy as the driver of an amphibious tank. He married Evelyn Brown (nee Stead) of Worthing, Sussex, England and returned to Canada in October 1945 where he was discharged. Evelyn followed in February 1946. Allan passed away in 1987. SMITH, Charles M. WWII Charles was born in Panbride, Scotland in 1913 and joined the # 10 District Depot, Canadian Infantry Corps, serving in Canada. He passed away in 1990 and had been a member of the Robert Frost Branch #133 of The Royal Canadian Legion for ten years. SMITH, Eric Brentnal WWI & WWII Eric was born in England in 1893. He enlisted in 1912 with the 2nd Canadian Division and trained in southern England before departing for Europe. He was in the first battle of Ypres, earning the 1914-15 Star. Following Passchendaele, he was with the first wave of Canadians at Vimy Ridge. He returned to Portage in 1919 and in 1921, joined the Portage Unit, became a 2nd Lieutenant, organized the band, taught rifle shooting and was a Range Safety Officer. Eric became Commanding Officer of 2/37th (RF) Battery. In March 1943, he transferred to Fort Osborn Barracks, received his Efficiency Decoration and was released at age 45. Eric passed away in 1977. SMITH, David W. PEACETIME David was born in Neepawa, Manitoba in 1933. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1952 and trained in St. Jean, QC and in Clinton, ON as an aircraft radio technician. His long career took him to MacDonald, MB, Penhold, AB, to Clinton and MacDonald again then to Southport. From 1962, he spent four years with NATO Peacekeeping at 3F Wing Zweibrücken, Germany. Back in Canada, he worked on Tutor aircraft in Moose Jaw, SK, taught electronics in Petawawa, ON and worked on CF5 Freedom Fighters in Cold Lake, AB. Released in 1977, he was awarded the NATO Star Medal and the Long Service Medal with Clasp for twenty-two years of service. David has been a member of RCL Birtle Branch #55 for ten years.
