87 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca GALKA, Charles I. WWII Charles was born in Walkleyburg, Manitoba in 1916. He joined the 29th Field Engineers and served in Canada, England, France, Holland and Germany. He’s been a member of the Selkirk Branch #42 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 55 years. GALLANT, Ronald E. PEACETIME Ron was born in Morden, Manitoba on August 21, 1940. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1957 and served on HMCS New Waterford, HMCS Bonaventure, HMCS Athabaskan and HMCS Kootenay. In recognition for his service with NATO in Germany from October 1959 to November 1960, Ron received the Special Services Medal with NATO bar. In 1962, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy and was honourably released February 6, 1967. Ron was a member of the Thompson Legion for four years and was with the Mackenzie BC Legion Branch #273 thirtytwo years, serving on the Executive as Vice—President and Treasurer. He received the B.C. –Yukon Command Provincial Volunteer of the Year Award. Ronald passed away in 2009. GARNHAM, Robert Clifford WWII Robert was born in Edwin, Manitoba in 1922 and enlisted in the 18th Manitoba Reconnaissance Battalion, 12th Manitoba Dragoons Squadron on May 28, 1941, serving as a Medical Orderly. His regiment treated 640 wounded and covered 40,000 miles. With the wounded on board, he was sent to pick up a wounded soldier who turned out to be his brother, Trooper William Earl Garnham. His longest evacuation was 60 miles and it took 24 hours to reach the closest medical establishment. Clifford was discharged on January 17, 1946 and was a member of the Stoney Mountain Branch #142 of The Royal Canadian Legion for many years. Robert passed away in 1976. GARNHAM, Leslie D. WWII Leslie was born in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba in 1917 and joined the Winnipeg Rifles in 1944. He received his basic training in North Bay, ON and his advanced training in Shilo, MB. He then sailed to Liverpool and transferred to Aldershot to be with the 6-pound anti-tank crew support company. While in Aldershot, he became ill, recovered and was transferred to the Algonquin Regiment where he served on the 6-pound anti-tank crew for the rest of the war. Stationed in Germany when the war ended, he arrived in Halifax in January 1946 and returned to Shilo where he was discharged in April. He’s been a member of RCL Portage la Prairie Branch #65 for thirty-two years.
