127 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca KEMBALL, Arthur Enifer WWII Arthur was born in Homewood, Manitoba in 1921. He enlisted in the Winnipeg Light Infantry in 1944, intending to follow his two brothers, Ed and Fred, to Europe. On completion of basic training and advanced training, Art’s unit was dispatched to Montreal to await embarkation to Europe. However, all the training and waiting was for naught as the war ended and victory declared. After his discharge, he returned to the Pine Falls area where he worked for the Abitibi Price Paper Mill and later farmed in the Stead area. He married and had one daughter, two grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Art received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. KEMPTHORNE, Frederick N. WWII & PEACETIME Frederick was born in the Boissevain area of Manitoba on March 6, 1925. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force at eighteen, graduated as a navigator in 1945 then became a Pilot Officer, receiving his Wings at Portage la Prairie, MB. Fred married Lily Hardy of Minto on August 31, 1946 then re-enlisted in the RCAF as a peacekeeper. He was posted to Rivers, MB and to Fontainebleau, France with the Occupation Forces in 1952. Back in Portage by 1956, Fred served mostly at Ontario bases and received his CGA designation while in the military before retiring in 1975 as a Captain. He also worked in Ottawa for the Federal Government seventeen years. Frederick passed away in Toronto in 2007. KILBOURNE, William B. WWII William was born in Swan River, Manitoba in 1922 and trained in Newfoundland where partway through his training, a German torpedo struck the small boat they were using. He was shipped to Scotland for further training and in 1943, was sent to Naples, Italy where he served for a year and a half. He went through the Hitler Goring and Gustav Lines, fought in Ortona then in Germany, France, Belgium and Holland. While in Italy, he was promoted to Corporal and then Sergeant. William had been a member of the Portage la Prairie Branch #65 of The Royal Canadian Legion for forty-eight years when he passed away in 2003. KIEPER, Wilbur A. WWII Wilbur was born in Manitoba in 1924. He enlisted in Winnipeg in May 1943 with the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve, serving in Canada and the Atlantic. He was discharged in October 1945, and received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. Wilbur is a member of Russell Branch #159 of The Royal Canadian Legion and lives in British Columbia.
