He enlisted in the Canadian Army in Winnipeg on April 18, 1939 and trained as a motor mechanic. He was sent to Debert, NS then overseas where he was stationed at Aldershot, England then moved to Charleswood where he met and married Joan Crees. He served in North Africa, Italy, France, Belgium and Holland. Bill repatriated to Canada in 1945 where he bought land through the VLA and raised two daughters. After Joan’s passing in 1979, he retired in Virden and married Ruth Frances in August 1986. They lived in Virden then moved to the Evergreen Lodge and then to the Westman Nursing Home where he passed away on July 9, 2009. JENKINS, Francis WWI Frank was born on March 19, 1898 in Ayrshire, Scotland. He and his brothers, Robert and William and brother-in-law Thomas McIlveen, enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. After Cadets, he joined the 79th Cameron Highlanders of Canada, Overseas Battalion and left Winnipeg for the UK on December 14, 1915. On February 16, 1916, he was promoted to Lance Corporal and with his Battalion, went to France as an Acting Sergeant then became a Sergeant on June 18, 1916. He was reported killed in action on October 8, 1916. He was 18 years old. Francis was posthumously awarded the British 1914-18 War Medal and the Victory Medal. His mother, Margaret received the Mother’s Cross. He and Thomas rest in France. JENKINS, William WWI William was born in Ayrshire, Scotland on April 1, 1900 and joined the 90th Regiment Winnipeg Rifles in April 1915 by lying about his age. On November 8, 1915, he enrolled with the Canadian Expeditionary Force, 90th Canadian Overseas Battalion, Winnipeg Rifles then transferred to the 61st (Winnipeg) Battalion CEF. On the ship to France, they discovered he was only 16 so Willie was returned to England where he stayed until his return to Canada after the war. He was awarded the British War Medal. Willie tried to enlist again for WWII, but at age 39, he was deemed too old. He received the Canadian Volunteer pin. William passed away in May 1970 at the age of seventy. JENKINS, Robert WWI Robert was born on January 25, 1892 in Ayrshire, Scotland. The family arrived in Canada on Christmas Day, 1910. He and his brothers, Francis and William and brother-in-law Thomas McIlveen, enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Overseas Force. Robert enrolled with the 61st Battalion CEF on April 22, 1915 and then was moved to the 44th Overseas Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. He left Winnipeg for England on October 18, 1915 and in August 1916, went to France and the Western Front. Robert’s unit received 15 Battle Honours. After the war, he moved to Chicago, USA. The date of his passing is unknown.
