191 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca SEMCHUK, James WWII James was born in the Rural Municipality of Gilbert Plains, Manitoba and joined the Army on March 20, 1941. He took his basic training in Winnipeg with the Royal Canadian Artillery and was stationed in Prince Rupert, Vancouver and Victoria, BC. James was honourably discharged in Winnipeg on December 24, 1945 and has been a member of the Gilbert Plains Branch #98 of The Royal Canadian Legion for thirty years. SHAW, John Alexander WWII John was born in Brandon, Manitoba in 1922 and for three years, served as a volunteer in the Navy on HMCS Mahone, HMCS Cowichan and HMCS Collingwood, often on the “Derry Run” from Halifax to Londonderry, Ireland. His convoy duty also took him to Algiers, Bermuda and on two occasions to New York where they spent time for a refit. Jack was on the boarding crew when the German U-boat V-188 surrendered at Shelburne, NS at the close of the war. Discharged in July 1945, Jack had been a Life Member of RCL Brandon Branch #3 when he passed away on March 28, 2000. He is buried in the Veterans’ Section of the Brandon Cemetery. SILL, Gordon WWII Gordon was born in Saskatchewan in 1916 and joined the Air Force # 40 Provost Corps, serving in Europe. He married Coreen McMillan while in the military. Gordon passed away in 2000. SHIPP, Harold Jack WWII Harold was born in Ontario in 1908 and enlisted in Trail, British Columbia with the 6th Field Royal Canadian Engineers, 3rd Division and was discharged in Vancouver, BC after having served in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the France and Germany Star and the War Medal 1939-45 and the General Service Medal.
