115 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca IMPETT, Stephen WWII Stephen was born in Birnie, Manitoba in 1916, the oldest of four children born to Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Impett of Birnie. He farmed with his parents before joining the Royal Canadian Artillery on February 27, 1941, serving in Canada, the UK and Europe. He received the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the 1939-45 War Medal. He came home on the H.M.T. Mauretania, arriving in Halifax on January 23, 1946. He then purchased his own farm in the Birnie area, a few miles from where his parents resided. Stephen passed away on March 29, 1972 and is buried in the Arden Cemetery in Manitoba. IMRIE (nee LUKER), Helen E. WWII Helen was born on March 31, 1918 in Rapid City, Manitoba. She enlisted in the Canadian Women’s Army Corps in June 1942 after graduating from Business College in Winnipeg. She served at Shilo, MB before being sent to England where she did office work while in the Army. She married Bert Imrie in 1947 and spent the rest of her life in Flin Flon where she worked in the office of the Flin Flon Royal Canadian Legion for a time. Helen passed away on July 13, 1987 and is buried in Flin Flon. IRVINE, Elmer W. WWII Elmer was born near Barwick, Ontario where he grew up on a farm. After basic training in Thunder Bay in 1941-42, he was sent to Winnipeg where he joined the Winnipeg Grenadiers, training orderlies until he was sent to Prince Rupert, BC. In 1943, he was sent to Britain as an infantry soldier, joining the Winnipeg Rifles there and training stretcher bearers. On the Continent with the Medical Corps’ 12th Light Field Ambulance, he stitched up the wounded and helped quickly set up and tear down hospitals before returning home to Winnipeg. Married in December 1945, Elmer and his wife, Grace Sargeant, raised a son, a daughter and have several grandchildren. Elmer is a member of RCL General Lipsett Branch #99. INGRAM, Arnold T. WWII Arnold was born in Lancaster, England in 1914. He graduated from Heathfield Military Law School and joined the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders, 2nd Division, serving in England and Canada. He passed away in 1977. No additional information is available.
