15 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca ARSENAULT, Hubert J. WWII Hubert was born on July 4, 1920 in Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba. After mining in Northern Manitoba, he enlisted as a Private with the Royal Canadian Engineers in Winnipeg in 1942 and trained in Chilliwack, BC. His unit was later stationed in Blaenavon, Wales to look for new sources of coal for the war effort. On January 6, 1943, Hubert transferred to the Royal Canadian Regiment and went to the Adriatic Front and within a year was a prisoner of war. Released in 1945, he recuperated in England, was discharged in Canada in October of that year and was awarded three medals, two stars and a bar for service. Hubert was with RCL Nutana Branch #362 and passed away on September 2, 1995. ARSENAULT (nee FOUNTAIN), Marie WWII Marie was born in Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba on September 16, 1922. She enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps in September 1942 and was posted to Vermillion, Alberta for basic training, later transferring to Red Deer, Alberta for driver training. From Vancouver, BC, she went on to Camp Borden in June of 1943 where she trained on a variety of vehicles, from two-ton trucks to staff cars. There, Marie was in charge of delivery of rations, hospital provisions, Sergeants’ Mess supplies and doing duty on Provo Patrol into neighbouring towns to reclaim errant personnel. She received two medals and was discharged at Long Branch, Ontario on February 14, 1946. ASPLUND, Melford WWII Melford was born in Fort Frances in 1927 and trained in Canada until his discharge at the end of the war. He passed away in 2002. No additional information is available. ASHLEY, Jack R. WWII Jack was born in Durham, Ontario in 1921. He joined the Canadian Infantry and transferred to the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion, qualifying as a Paratrooper in Canada. He then took paratrooper training in England, qualifying to wear the British Paratrooper Wings before transferring to the joint US/Canada Special Service Force for paratrooper training, again qualifying to wear the US Paratrooper Wings. Jack was severely injured in Montana and was declared unfit for overseas service. He spent the rest of the war training paratroopers at Camp Shilo, MB where he met and married Blossom Nichol from the Canadian Women’s Army Corps. Jack had been a member of RCL The Pas Branch #19 for fifty years when he died in 2006.
