185 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca ROSS, Gill L. WWII Gill was born in Treherne, Manitoba in 1912. He enlisted in “C” Squadron, 10th Armoured Division of the Fort Garry Horse on March 18, 1940, taking his basic training in Winnipeg and Shilo, Manitoba and Camp Borden at Barrie, Ontario. Posted to England in 1941, he later landed at Juno Beach during the Normandy invasion and fought in France, Germany and Holland. Gill passed away in June 2000 at the age of eighty-eight and is buried in Hillside Cemetery in Portage la Prairie. RUSSELL, Clifford S. WWII Clifford enlisted in February 1942 in Winnipeg with the Manitoba Dragoons and was discharged there in February 1946 after having served in the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the France and Germany Star and the 193945 Star. Clifford passed away in 1998. RYLAND, Edward Herbert (Ted) WWII Edward was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1922. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, 402 Squadron, formerly the 112 City of Winnipeg Squadron, and served in Canada, England and Northwest Europe. Shortly after his return, Ted joined the City of Winnipeg Police Department in April 1947 and retired in September 1976 after thirty years of service. He passed away in 1989 and was a member of the Elmwood Branch #9 of The Royal Canadian Legion. RUSTULKA, Mike KOREA Mike was born in Bienfait, Saskatchewan in 1932, joining the Navy in 1950 and training in Cornwallis, NS. During the Korean War, he served on HMCS Crusader and after the war, joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, earning the rank of Master Corporal in the Mobile Support Equipment Operator trade. Retired in 1978, he worked at Canadian Forces Base Southport, MB until 1992. He received numerous medals for his service in Korea, Egypt, Germany as well as the Canadian Decoration for long service. Mike died on February 27, 2010 in Portage la Prairie at seventy-seven and is survived by three daughters and four grandsons. He was a member of RCL Branch #65 for forty-eight years as well as the Korea Veteran’s Association of Canada.
