103 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca HANSLEY, Robert WWI Robert was born in Lincolnshire, England in 1865 and immigrated to Ontario with his parents in 1883. He married Effie Burrows and they came to Manitoba with their three children, settling in the Homewood area. Five more children would be born before Effie’s death in 1908. In 1916, he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Carman, Manitoba along with his two sons, John and Bill. He remained in the Army for a while after WWI ended, then he resumed farming in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. Robert remarried in 1929 and settled in Winnipeg until his death in 1945. He is buried in Carman. HANSLEY, William F. WWI William was born in Homewood, Manitoba in 1899, the second eldest son to Robert and Effie Hansley. He enlisted in 1916 with the Canadian Expeditionary Force, served overseas and returned home to continue farming in the Carman, Manitoba area. He passed away in 1984 as a bachelor and is buried in Carman. Bill loved family gatherings, dancing and horses. HATCH, Eldon (Kutch) WWII Eldon was born in Hartney, Manitoba in 1914. He joined the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders Signal Corps and served in Canada, England and France where he was killed in 1942 during the Dieppe Raid. Eldon is buried at the Dieppe Canadian War Cemetery in Hautot-sur-Mer, France. Hatch Lake, north of Molson Lake, was named after him in 1973. HARPELLE, Norman L. WWII Norman was born on March 6, 1921 at Roseisle, Manitoba and joined the Active Canadian Army on September 4, 1939 in Kingston, Ontario. He served in Canada, Britain, in the Central Mediterranean area and in Northwest Europe. Norman held the rank of Corporal when he was discharged in Kingston, Ontario on August 7, 1945. He received the 1939-45 Star, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and the War Medal 1939-45. Norman passed away in 1991.
