She was one of the first six women to join the Canadian Women’s Army Corps, serving at Shilo where she met Edward Emmett (Bud) Duffy whom she married in February 1943. While Bud served overseas for the remainder of the war, she remained with her parents and it was during this time that their first child was born. After the war, they lived at Brandon and Miniota before moving to Portage la Prairie in the early 50s. Irene passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 25, 1993 at the Portage General Hospital. EASTMAN, Everett WWII Everett was born in Hartney, Manitoba in 1925 and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force as an air gunner, serving in Canada. He passed away in 2009 and was a Life Member of the Hartney Branch #26 of The Royal Canadian Legion. No additional information is available. EDGERTON, Richard Russell WWI Trooper Richard Russell was born on July 16, 1896 in Toronto, Ontario and was the third born to Thomas and Annie (Oke) Edgerton. They moved to the Lily District, south of Souris, Manitoba in 1903. Russ enlisted in the military on May 3, 1918 and worked as a stretcher-bearer in Halifax, Nova Scotia during the flu epidemic. He smoked a crooked-stemmed pipe which he firmly believed warded off germs. Russ was discharged in 1919, then returned to the Elgin district and farmed in the Rural Municipality of Whitewater. Russ married Edith McCulloch on January 26, 1926 and passed away on April 5, 1940. EDGERTON, Clifford L. WWII Clifford was born in 1914 on a farm in Souris, Manitoba. He joined Unit 10 District Depot of the Canadian Army Provost Corps and trained in Winnipeg and Camp Borden, Ontario. Because of a broken knee injury when he was younger, he was delegated to police duties and travelled from coast to coast on train patrols while stationed in Winnipeg. He was a Lance Corporal and was discharged in April 1946. When Clifford passed away in 1987, he had been a member of the Camp Borden Branch of The Royal Canadian Legion for four years.
