197 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca SMITH, Eric Sydney WWII Eric was born in Portage la Prairie in 1926. He joined the Artillery Reserves in 1941, the Air Force in September 1943, graduated from # 3 Bombing and Gunnery School at MacDonald, MB then was on HMS Aquitania with the 20MM gun crew. His first UK posting was Bournemouth then went north to 86 and 82 OTV’s for crewing up, as a rear gunner. He was on Operatives with 434 Bluenose Squadron and on occupation with # 427 Lion Squadron, coming home in March of 1946. He re-enlisted as an armoured and reverted to Leading Aircraftman, taking his release after four years. Eric joined the # 19 Army Cadet Corps, later became Commanding Officer for fourteen years. In 2006, he was made Honourary Commanding Officer. STEEL, Archibald WWI Archibald was born in Toronto, County of York, in 1872 and joined the 16th Canadian Scottish Regiment, serving in France. He retired in 1923 and farmed in Mayfield, Manitoba. He then lived in Winnipeg, MB and passed away in the Shaughnessy Military Hospital in British Columbia in 1951. STEWART, James D. WWII James was born in High Bluff, Manitoba on August 2, 1925. He joined the Navy in Winnipeg in 1943 and took his basic training in Windsor, Ontario, training as a stoker at HMCS Cornwallis on the Bay of Fundy. Stormy weather did not bother him as his convoy duty often included trips to Bermuda. He presently lives in Douglas Campbell Lodge in Portage la Prairie and has been a member of Branch #65 Portage la Prairie Royal Canadian Legion for fifty years. STEWART, Andrew M. WWII Andrew enlisted in Winnipeg in June 1940 with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry Westminster Regiment and was discharged in Winnipeg in October 1945 after having served in Italy and Holland. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the Italy Star and the 1939-45 Star. Andrew passed away in 1996.
