1 www.mbnwo.ca This year on August 19th,, we marked the 70th anniversary of the Dieppe Raid. This probably will be the last 10-year reunion as most of the Dieppe Veterans are in their very late 80’s or early 90’s. On this day Canada suffered a 60 per cent casualty rate. No doubt, some of the selections in this 3rd edition of the Military Service Recognition Books are Dieppe Veterans. Once again this edition is not only a tribute to these Veterans but a tribute to all Veterans from all generations. The cover photo of this edition, like the first two editions (Brookside and Transcona Fields of Honour), is a cemetery in Fort Frances, Ontario. Again proceeds from this edition are used for various Legion programs and we are truly thankful to all donors and advertisers. We Will Remember Them! 7 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca ADAMS, Clarence Percival WWII & KOREA & SPECIAL DUTY AREA & PEACETIME Clarence was born in Selkirk, Manitoba in 1926 to Percival and Marion Adams. He joined the Army in October 1944, served in Winnipeg with the Canadian Infantry Corps, and was discharged in 1945 on demobilization. He later re-enlisted for the Korean War and served from 1952-53 with the 1st Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment, Airborne Division. Clarence also served in Germany and with the Emergency Forces in Egypt from 1956-57. He was awarded the British War Medal 1939-45, the Canadian Korea Medal, the United Nations Service Medal for Korea, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal for Korea. He was a member of Selkirk Legion Branch 42. Clarence died in 1988 and is buried at Clements in Selkirk. Manitoba. ADAMS, Ernest Gordon WWII Ernest was born in 1903 to Joseph and Harriet Adams of Selkirk, Manitoba. He enlisted in the Army in Winnipeg in September 1939 and served five years with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles in England and Europe during World War II. He was awarded the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the War Medal 1939-45. Ernest was a member of Selkirk Legion Branch 42 before he died in 1973. He is buried in St. Clements, Selkirk. ADAMS, Leslie J. PEACETIME Leslie was born in Selkirk, Manitoba in 1941. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served with NORAD in Canada and in the United States. Primarily, he served at Canadian Forces stations in Canada and attended training schools in Biloxi, Mississippi and the Federal Aviation Administration Academy in Oklahoma. Leslie was promoted to Sergeant in 1979 and awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration with Clasp. He has been a member of Selkirk Legion Branch 42 for forty-seven years. ADAMS, George H. WWII George joined the Chaplaincy Service in Winnipeg in September 1941 and served as Honorary Captain in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany during World War II. He was awarded the War Medal 1939-45, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the Defence Medal. George was discharged in January 1946 in Winnipeg and has been a member of Russell Legion Branch 159.

9 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca ADAMS, Lloyd Melvin KOREA Lloyd was born in Selkirk, Manitoba in 1931 to Ernest and Gertrude Adams. He enlisted in the Army in Winnipeg and joined the 4th Canadian Guards. He served in Korea from 1953 and then returned to Canada, transferring to Lord Strathcona’s Horse in Calgary, Alberta. Lloyd received the Canadian Korea Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal for Korea and the United Nations Service Medal for Korea. He was a Member of Selkirk Legion Branch 42. Lloyd died in 1996 and is buried in the Veterans Field of Honour in Calgary, Alberta. ADAMS, Percival WWI Percival was born in Selkirk, Manitoba in 1897 to Joseph and Harriet Adams. He enlisted with the Royal Engineers, Canadian Expeditionary Force and served in Europe. Percival died in 1937 from complications resulting of his being gassed during World War I. He was a Member of Selkirk Legion Branch 42. ALLAN, Gordon J. WWII Gordon was born in Emo, Ontario on January 10, 1914. He enlisted in the Army on September 2, 1943 at the age of 29, trained at Fort Osborne, Fort Garry, and was later posted to Shilo, Manitoba. Due to medical reasons, he could not go overseas so he worked in Brandon, Manitoba at the hospital for returned service personnel until the end of the war. He was discharged on July 2, 1946 as a Corporal with the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps and was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. Gordon returned to the Rainy River District with his family and worked in logging, farming, and guiding. He also drove taxis and was an equipment operator for many years in Emo where he lived and raised three girls with his wife, Mildred. Gordon had been a member of General Lipsett Legion Branch 99 for over 40 years when he passed away on May 23, 1991. AIKENHEAD, Campbell D. WWI Campbell was born in 1891. He joined the Army and served with the Canadian Army Medical Corps, No. 2 Canadian Chaplains Service, No. 1 Canadian General Hospital. Campbell served in France and Bonn, Germany. He died in 1973.

11 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca ALLEN, Frederick K. WWII Frederick was born in the Stanley Municipality of Manitoba in 1918. He joined the 12th Manitoba Dragoons as a Trooper at age 22 and served with the 18th Armoured Car Regiment, driving an armoured car throughout his service. These vehicles were the leading edge of troop movement into towns and villages and were also used for reconnaissance. He served in England and Europe, earning the 1939-1945 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. During the liberation of Holland in 1945, he met and married Leny tenBos. In January 1946, Fred was discharged and returned to Canada, with his war bride following in August. They raised six children on a family farm at Thornhill, Manitoba. Fred was a member of Morden Legion Branch 11 for over fifty years until he died in June 1996. ALLEN, Richard B. WWII & SPECIAL DUTY AREA Richard was born in Winnipeg in 1920. He joined the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps and was attached to the 24th Field Ambulance, 5th Division. He served in Canada, England, Italy, France, Belgium and Holland during World War II. Richard was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration, the 1939-45 Star, the Italy Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the Defence Medal, the France and Germany Star, and the War Medal 1939-45. Richard was a Captain (Rtd) and Chief Instructor of the Army Cadets. He has been a member of Kenora Legion Branch 12 for sixty years. ARNOULD, Harry J. KOREA Harry was born on July 29, 1928 in Rainy River, Ontario. On January 21, 1952, he enlisted with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, 3rd Battalion of the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps. He did his basic and advanced training at Ipperwash and Camp Borden, Ontario; Wainwright and Jasper, Alberta; and at Rivers and Camp Shilo, Manitoba, where he completed his Airborne jump training. He served in Korea as a Corporal from October 1952 and was wounded a month later, in November. He also served in Japan. Harry was discharged in Winnipeg in January 1955 after which he resumed his employment with the Canadian National Railway. He was a conductor when he retired in 1984 after 40 years with C.N.R. Harry has been a Life member of Major Hughes Legion Branch 54 for fifty-six years and has held the Membership, Honours and Awards offices. Harry was awarded the UN and Korea Medals. ANDREWS, Arthur WWI Arthur joined the Army during World War I and served in France with the 45th and 78th Battalions at St. Eloi, the Somme, Vimy, Passchendaele, and Amiens where he was killed in action in 1918.

He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served with the 78th Battalion Winnipeg Grenadiers and the 2nd Canadian Reserve Brigade. Lieutenant Baker served in France at Ypres Salient, the Somme, Vimy, as well as in Belgium. He was wounded in action. R.H. also served in World War II and died in 1958. BAKER, William WWI William was born in London, England. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served overseas with the 222nd and the 44th Battalions. On August 11, 1919, William was killed by shrapnel while in a work party with the 4th Entrenching Battalion at Vimy in northern France. BEDDINGTON, William WWII William was born in Matlock, Derbyshire, England in 1890 and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force radar technicians on November 15, 1940. He was discharged on September 30, 1941 after having served as a Leading Aircraftman. William was a member of Fort Garry Legion Branch 90 and he passed away on October 6, 1970. BAUCHE, Paul WWI Paul was born in Belgium in 1896. He joined the Canadian Army and served in Seaford and Sussex, England during World War I.

15 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca BELL, Robert G. WWII Robert was born on April 10, 1924 in Elgin, Manitoba. He joined the Army in April 1943 and in December, went overseas where he served with the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps in Holland, France, Belgium, and Germany. He returned to Elgin in March 1946. Robert was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal with Bar, the 1939-45 Star, and the King George Medal with Crown. He was a member of Ontario’s Petrolia Legion Branch 216 for thirty-five years before he passed away on March 6, 2007. BELL, Robert J. “Bob” WWII Bob was born in Morris, Manitoba in 1903. During World War II, he served as a truck driver with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders in England and France from March 29, 1940 to June 29, 1945. He drove his friends, William Thomson and Lloyd Shewman, in the convoy which disembarked to the battle of Dieppe where they were taken prisoners. Upon his return from overseas, Bob went into the draying business and with his horses, was a familiar figure in town. In 1953, he was employed by the Town of Morris as Superintendent of Works and Operations, retiring in 1972. Bob was a Life member of Morris Legion Branch 111 and with his wife, raised five children, including one adopted son. For years, he took part in the Big M Stampede where he raced his thoroughbreds in the chuck wagon, chariot and suicide Ben Hur races, winning many trophies. Bob was 79 years old when he died in Morris on September 23, 1982. BERRY, Albert Henry WWII Albert was born on June 22, 1923 in Glenboro, Manitoba. He was 19 when he joined the Canadian Army, going on to do his basic training in Portage la Prairie and Shilo, Manitoba. He then joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and attended the Initial Training School, the first step in becoming a pilot. Albert, Leading Aircraftman, was transferred to Edmonton, Alberta where he continued his pilot’s training. He was then sent to Lethbridge to await a further posting but the war ended before his training was finished. Albert’s name is engraved on the Veteran’s Wall of Remembrance in Winnipeg, Manitoba. His dream to become a pilot was realized in 1963 when he received his private pilot’s license. Albert was a member of Souris Legion Branch 60 and he died on October 5, 2008. BENNETT, Cameron G. C. SPECIAL DUTY AREA & PEACETIME Cameron was born in Newmarket, Ontario in 1979 and moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1984 with his parents and sister. Cameron is the grandson of a WWII Veteran and joined the Fort Garry Horse in 1998 when he was 18 years old. He transferred to Regular Force 2nd Battalion Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) in 2000. Cameron served with them in Bosnia from October – March 2001 and in Afghanistan from March – July 2002. He then transferred to the PPCLI 1st Battalion and served in Afghanistan from January – October 2008 and from June – November 2011. Currently, Cameron is still serving.
