131 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca McMILLAN, Dorothy Mary WWII Dorothy was born in 1915 in Dauphin, Manitoba, where she received her education. She joined the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service and served as a Petty Officer in the clerical section of the Medical Corps. She left the Navy for a short time and entered the School of Nursing in Winnipeg where she graduated as a Registered Nurse. She then re-joined the Navy, and worked in various locales in Canada. Dorothy married George McClay and they did not have a family. Dorothy passed away in 1971. McMORRIS, William A. WWII William was born in 1918 in Winchester, near Dand, Manitoba. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served with Air Crew 1 in Canada during World War II. He was a member of Boissevain Legion Branch 10. William died in 2009. McPHAIL (nee HERRIOT), Ethel M. WWII Ethel was born in 1922 in Ottawa, Ontario. In 1943, she was attending the Manitoba Medical College when she was asked to join the Army, but since the Medical Corps had no females at that time, she joined the Canadian Women’s Army Corps. On graduation, she went to Borden, Manitoba for basic training and became a Captain (female medical officer) in the Medical Corps. She spent the rest of the war treating and discharging CWACs at Fort Osborne Barracks in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She was a member of Boissevain Legion Branch 10 for nine years. Ethel married Donald M. McPhail in 1945. McPHAIL, Donald M. WWII Donald was born in 1921 in Burdett, Alberta. In 1943, he joined the Army as a private while attending Medical College. On graduation, he went to Borden, Manitoba for basic training after which he was appointed Captain and placed with the Royal Canadian Medical Corps to prepare for the Japanese front. He married Ethel Herriot in 1945 and after serving in Borden and Winnipeg, was discharged in 1946, returning to do surgery at Winnipeg’s St. Boniface Hospital. Donald was a member of Boissevain Legion Branch 10 for fifty years before he passed away in 2004.
