193 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca SCHRAM, Vernon H. WWII Vernon was born in Cartwright, Manitoba in 1911. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940 and trained as an aircraft mechanic. In 1943, he was stationed in Darlington, England where he led a group of five men with instructions to keep their Lancasters in the air as long as possible. One night, he was signaling his plane in using a flashlight in each hand, when he fell in a hole backing up. The prop knocked his hat off and he went down. The pilot thought he had killed him but found Vernon sitting on the ground looking for his hat. While in London for an accelerometer course, he could hear “B” bombs humming over London, then the noise would cut out and they’d explode. Vernon returned to Canada in 1945 to help on the farm and the war ended several weeks later. He was a member and Past President of Cartwright-Mather Legion Branch 86 for fifty-five years and he died in 2001. SCHROEDER (nee WILLIAMS), Mary Ellen WWII Mary was born in St. John, New Brunswick on June 21, 1921. She joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served in World War II. Mary was a member of the Souris Legion Branch 60 before she died in 2005. SCOTT, Robert George “Bob” WWII Bob was born in Desford, Manitoba on April 8, 1922. He enlisted at the No. 10 District Depot of the Canadian Army (Active) in Winnipeg, Manitoba on March 11, 1942. He served as a Private with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada in the United Kingdom, Continental Europe and Canada. He was discharged on November 29, 1944 after being wounded. Bob had met and married Dorothy Eileen Stewart of Souris, Manitoba on December 1, 1942 and together, they raised five children. He was a member of Souris Legion Branch 60 for over 30 years until he died on February 28, 1985 at the age of 62. SCOTT, Alexander G. “Sandy” WWII Sandy was born in Boissevain, Manitoba on July 27, 1922. He joined the Army and served with the Lord Strathcona Horse RC “Tank Division” in Canada, Central Mediterranean, Belgium, Italy and Holland. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the Italy Star and the France and Germany Star. He was a member of Dauphin Legion Branch 20 for five years. Sandy died in 1997.
