75 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca HINDSON, Joseph WWI Joseph was born in England in 1894 and came to Gladstone, Manitoba in 1909. He joined the Canadian Army and served as a Private with the 44th and 61st Battalions in France during World War I. He was taken prisoner and spent almost 2 years as a POW. After the war, he farmed until failing health, partly due to wounds he sustained during the war, forced him to retire early. Joseph passed away in 1965 and is buried in Gladstone. HODGES, Edward G. WWII Edward was born in Elphinstone, Manitoba on September 3, 1914. He joined the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry on June 12, 1940 and transferred to the Calgary Tanks, serving in Sicily, Italy, Germany and Dieppe, France. He received the Service Medal, the Italy Medal, the Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. Edward passed away on January 7, 1997 and was a member of the Erickson Legion Branch 134 and Clear Lake Legion Branch 67 for a total of fifty-seven years. HOLDER, Richard Ross WWII Ross was born in Scarth, Manitoba in 1914 and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in Winnipeg on June 15, 1941. He trained as an Aero Engine Mechanic “A” in St. Thomas, Ontario then was made an instructor at the completion of his training. He spent all his time in St. Thomas until he was transferred to Comox, British Columbia in 1945. Ross was discharged from the Air Force in Vancouver on August 30, 1945 and he passed away in 2001. HODGSON, Wilfred WWII Wilfred was born in Carlisle, Northumberland, England on July 7, 1910. He joined the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada and served in Canada, Britain and Europe. He was killed in action in France in 1944 at a town outside of Caen called Tilly-la-Campagne. Hitler’s SS troops were holding it and Wilfred’s company was the lead company. When his officer, Lieutenant Sloane, was wounded, Wilfred stayed with him until they were both killed. He is buried in Bretteville-surLaize Canadian War Cemetery in France and has an island named after him in Northern Manitoba.
