21 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca BRAUN, Bernhard “Ben” WWII Ben was born in Rush Lake, Saskatchewan in 1917. He joined the Army and served with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in Canada, England, Holland, and Belgium. Prior to going overseas, Ben was stationed at Portage La Prairie and Winnipeg, Manitoba; Woodstock, Ontario; Halifax, Nova Scotia; Gander, Newfoundland; and Goose Bay, Labrador. He has been a member of Morris Legion Branch 111 for forty-eight years. BROOKS, Marvin H. SPECIAL DUTY AREA & PEACETIME Marvin was born in 1932 in Edmonton, Alberta where he later joined the Army. He served his first nine years as a Signals Electrician with the Royal Canadian Signals then remustered to Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers at CFB Shilo, retiring as a Sergeant after 25 years of service. Marvin served in Canada, Germany, Alert NWT, and Egypt and was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration with Clasp and the Queen’s Jubilee Medal. After leaving the military, he spent 11 years as an HP3 with the Public Service then retired after 36 years of service. Marvin was a member of Brandon Legion Branch 3 for forty-two years before he passed away in Shilo on May 29, 2009. BUDD, Kenneth KOREA & SPECIAL DUTY AREA Kenneth was born in Canada in 1932. He joined the Army and served in Canada, Japan and Korea with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry Airborne Unit. Kenneth has been a member of the Fort Garry Legion Branch 90 for 47 years. BROWN, David WWII David was born in Lowe Farm, Manitoba on January 3, 1920. He took his basic training at Fort Garry and his advanced training at Dundurn before being posted to 31 Alberta Royal Canadian Reconnaissance Regiment (RECCE) and training with this unit mainly in 6-pdr troop. He received his driver’s training in the Canadian Armoured Corps and transferred to England, seeing active duty as a Trooper in Northwest Europe with the 4th Canadian RECCE Regiment. After the war, he was on detached duty to “Exercise Musk Ox” field force in Churchill in 1946. David received the France and Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, and the War Medal 1939-45. Back in civilian life, he worked in construction, married Helen Rempel in 1948, and raised a family of six. David passed away in 1968 at the age of forty-eight.
