He joined the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps on July 18, 1940 and trained at Fort Osborne Barracks and Shilo, Manitoba; London and Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario; Debert, Nova Scotia; and Sussex, New Brunswick. Frank served as a Private and transport driver from 1942 to 1945 in Canada, England, Sicily, Italy and Holland. He recounts spending one Christmas in Italy in pup tents while it rained and snowed and getting too close to the Germans in Florence. Discharged on September 7, 1945, Frank married Bertha Hallacy on July 17, 1940 and was a barber after the war. He died on December 13, 1999, and he and Bertha are both buried in Chapel Memorial Lawn Gardens in Winnipeg. They had no children. JOHNSON, Richard I. WWII Richard was born in Glenwood, Manitoba in 1926 and joined the Royal Canadian Navy, serving in Canada, India and Africa. He was a member of Legion branches in Kenora, Ontario and Souris, Manitoba. Richard passed away in 1991. No additional information is available. KALISKA, Ladislav “Lad” WWII Lad was born on January 12, 1925 in Bardejov, Slovakia. His family immigrated to Crescent Mine, Saskatchewan in January 1930 and then moved to homestead at Pinewood, Ontario in early 1934. Due to the 1930s Depression and lack of employment, he enlisted in the Army with the 18th Manitoba Armoured Car Reconnaissance. D.N.D. later ascertained that he was under age and discharged him. At 16, Lad re-enlisted in June 1942 in Winnipeg with the Royal Canadian Artillery, giving his age as 18 years. He served with the First Canadian Army, 55th Field Battery, 19th Field Regiment (SP), in Canada, United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. He was honourably discharged in January 1946, three weeks before his 21st birthday. Lad was a member of several Legion Branches in Ontario for a total of fifty-three years: namely, the Thunder Bay Slovak Branch, the Atikokan Branch 145 and the Major Hughes Branch 54. Lad died in July 2000. JONSSON, Hermann WWI Hermann was born in Iceland. He joined the Army and served with the 222nd Battalion and the 44th Battalion on the hospital ship “Araguaya”. He fought at Vimy, the Triangle and La Coulette in France. No additional information is available.
