He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and the England’s Royal Air Force as a Wireless Air Gunner and served in Canada, England, Gibraltar, and Africa. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Maple Leaf, the 1939-45 Star, the War Medal 1939-45 and the Defence Medal. George died in 1985. OLDEN, Merton E. WWII Merton was born in Paynton, Saskatchewan in 1918. He joined the Army and served in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba during World War II. Merton passed away in 1999. OLIVER, George J. WWI George was born in Scotland in 1891 and immigrated to Brandon, Manitoba in 1907. He enlisted with the 12th Manitoba Dragoons in Brandon, trained at Val Cartier, QC and England then sailed to France on April 1, 1915. He served in France and Belgium with the 5th and 2nd Canadian Infantry then was a lineman with the 1st Canadian Division Signal Corps, serving at Ypres, Vimy, Hill 70, Passchendaele, Hill 62, Canal du Nord and Amiens. Sergeant Oliver’s job was to lay telephone communication lines between headquarters and the front. For bravery in the field, he received three Military Medals and two bars as well as the Distinguished Conduct Medal. His awards are now on display at the RCAMuseum in Shilo, Manitoba, along with his war memorabilia. During WWII, Oliver served in the Volunteer Reserve. He had been a member of Brandon Legion Branch 3 for twenty-five years when he died in 1968. He is buried in Brandon Cemetery. OLINYK, Michael WWII Michael was born in September 1914 in Rainy River, Ontario. He enlisted in the Canadian Army in Winnipeg in October 1939 and served as a Private with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in Canada, United Kingdom, Italy, North Africa, France and Germany until his discharge in August 1945. Michael married in May 1947 and moved with his wife to Atikokan, Ontario. He did various jobs, including truck driving at Steep Rock Iron Mine and later at Falconbridge Mine in Sudbury, Ontario. He helped build the Air Force Base at Tuktoyaktuk, NWT and Baffin Island, followed by a move in 1960 to Thunder Bay, Ontario where he finished his career with Ontario Hydro and retired to Rainy River in 1972. He served on the Executive and was also was a Life member of Major Hughes Legion Branch 54 for more than fifty years before he passed away at age 85 in January 2000.
