117 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca MARDON, Harry L. WWII & SPECIAL DUTY AREA Harry was born in Cambridge, England in 1926. He ran away from home three times in order to join the British Army, each time being returned by the village Bobby. He finally joined the Seaforth Highlanders at the end of WWII and rose from Private to Captain, seeing action in the Malayan Emergency where he was Mentioned in Dispatches in 1948 for Gallantry as 21C of Ferret Force, a mixed British/Gurkha/Malay long-range reconnaissance jungle-warfare group. He served in the United Kingdom, India, Java, Malaya and Singapore. Later, he became a long-time Editor at the Winnipeg Tribune, V.P. of Public Relations at the Investors’ Group, and President of the Manitoba Chamber of Commerce. He was the recipient of numerous journalism awards, and was appointed by the Premier of Manitoba to the Order of the Buffalo Hunt, amongst other distinctions. Harry and his wife, journalist Vera Mardon, had three children. He was a member of Gladstone Legion Branch 110 before he died in 2003. MARTEL, Stella WWII Stella was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1923 and passed away in 2004. During World War II, she served in Canada with the Women’s Division of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Stella was a member of Fort Garry Legion Branch 90 for fiftyfive years. MARUSCHAK, John WWII John was born in 1921 in Stuartburn, Manitoba and at the age of 13, left home to work as a farm labourer. In 1939, when he was 18 years old, he enlisted with the Winnipeg Grenadiers and served as a Private in Jamaica before being sent with 1,975 Canadian soldiers to defend Hong Kong. He spent the next three years and eight months as slave labour in a POW camp there. After the war, John worked for Inman Motors in Winnipeg as a body man/trimmer and was highly regarded in his trade. He married M.E. Pearl Johnson on May 22, 1946 and they had one daughter and two grandchildren. A music man from 1961, he played records and tapes for weddings, etc. and cherished spending time with his grandchildren as they grew up. He enjoyed photography, video, and computers, and his love of family and music gave him great pleasure throughout his life. John was a member of the Duke of Kent and Henderson Highway Legion Branches for more than 50 years. He died on December 29, 2008. MARTIN, Harold E. WWII Harold was born in 1922 in Lavenham, Manitoba. He joined the Army and served with the Calgary Highlanders in England and France during World War II. Harold was a Life member of Pilot Mound Legion Branch 62 for sixty-three years.
