123 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca McCULLOCH, Gordon Edgar WWII Gordon was born in Kisbey, Saskatchewan on May 16, 1916 and moved with his family to Souris, Manitoba in 1934. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in January 1942 and served with the Aero Mechanics Division in St. Thomas, Ontario after attending Manning Depot in Edmonton. He also served in Brantford, Ontario and in Gimli and Souris from where he received his discharge in November 1945. Gordon married Muriel Christie in 1944, farmed in the Souris area and also worked for the Canadian Pacific Railroad. He was a member of Souris Legion Branch 60 and he died on July 9, 1990 in Souris. McDONALD, Robert Douglas “Doug” WWII Although Doug was born in Darlingford, Manitoba on December 12, 1924, his early years were lived in Pine Falls and Bissett, Manitoba. He served in Canada as a Flying Officer with the Snowy Owl Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force then was posted overseas where he served in England and completed a tour of bombing operations over Northern Europe. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the War Medal 1939-45, the Air Bomber’s Badge and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. After his discharge, Doug settled in Calgary, Alberta where he was well known and respected as a horseman. Doug passed away in Edmonton, Alberta on January 30, 1975. McDOUGALL, Robert J. “Bob” WWII Bob was born near Margaret, Manitoba on August 24, 1921. He enlisted in the Army and served as a driver with the 23rd Field Regiment of the Royal Canadian Artillery. After spending fifty-two months overseas, he returned to Canada in October 1945 and started work as a mechanic in Margaret, where he married Bernice in 1946. They later lived and worked in Winnipeg, then Swan River and then came back to Winnipeg in 1981. After Bernice passed away in 1993, Bob joined Club 66 and volunteered at the Western Canada Aviation Museum where he conducted tours. Bob passed away on September 25, 2007. McDOUGALL (nee VOTH), Jean E. WWII Jean was born in Riverside, Manitoba in 1925. She joined the Army in 1943 and was stationed in Souris, Manitoba where she served with the Canadian Women’s Army Corps for the duration of the war. Jean may have died around 2007.
