29 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca CLOUTIER, Joseph J. “Joe” KOREA Joe was born in The Pas, Manitoba in 1927 and joined the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry as a Private in Winnipeg on September 7, 1950. He trained at Calgary, AB and Fort Lewis, Washington. While at Fort Lewis, he transferred to the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps and served in Japan as well as in Korea as a truck driver, hauling ammunition and supplies to the front lines. On one occasion, while returning from the front during an action, Joe encountered a convoy moving vital supplies up. He pulled his truck off the road into an area he knew to be mined and was wounded in the explosion when his truck hit a mine. For this action, Joe was awarded Mentioned-in-Dispatches on July 28, 1952. The official letter notifying Private Cloutier reads in part, “in recognition of gallantry and outstanding service in Korea.” Joe passed away in 2007 and was a member of The Pas Legion Branch 19 for fifty-five years. COSTELLO, Christopher M. WWI Christopher was born in Pembroke, Ontario in 1889 and enlisted in the 44th Battalion in 1915. He trained in Manitoba at Shilo and for a time, his unit was stationed in Gladstone in tents. He served in England and France where he was wounded when a bullet came through the embankment and lodged in his spine. He carried this bullet for the rest of his life. He worked for the B&B of the Canadian National Railway and retired in Gladstone in 1940. Chris passed away on December 16, 1976 and was a member of Gladstone Legion Branch 110 for thirtysix years. CURRIE, Robert B. WWII Robert joined the Canadian Army and served in Woodstock, Ontario, and at Shilo and Churchill in northern Manitoba where he tested heavy duty trucks and tanks in extreme cold. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. Robert has been a member of Pilot Mound Legion Branch 62 for fifty-three years. COWIE, John Robert “Jack” WWII Jack was born in Boissevain, Manitoba on May 28, 1915. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in France and Germany during World War II. Jack passed away on March 28, 2003.
