149 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca NOBLE, Ernest F. WWII Ernest was born in Boissevain, Manitoba in 1915. He joined the Army and served with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps in Canada, England, Holland and Germany. He received the Oak Leaf and a Mention in Dispatch for distinguished service in August 1945. Ernest was a member of Boissevain Legion Branch 10 for thirty-two years before he died in 1978. NORDIN, Emanuel N. “Manny” WWII Manny was born to Knuts and Emma Nordin in Bergland, Ontario on February 1, 1925 and he worked on his parents’ farm until he was 18. He then joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in Winnipeg in August 1943 and trained in Brandon, Dauphin and Rivers, Manitoba. He served as a Corporal in Canada until his discharge in Winnipeg in September 1946, the same year he married Eileen whom he met while in the service. His father had served in WWI and WWII, enlisting at the age of 17. Back to civilian life, Manny worked at odd jobs, which were scarce, including one year with the C.N.R. In 1955, he hired on with the Ontario Liquor Board and retired in 1983 after 30 years of service. Manny was Legion Branch Secretary for 30 years and also served in all Branch Offices. He has been a member of Major Hughes Legion Branch 54 for sixty-three years. O’BRIEN, Stanley Walter “Mike Rocky” WWII Stanley was born in Valpoy, Manitoba in 1922. He enlisted at Osborne Barracks in Winnipeg and served with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders, the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, and the 8th Royal Canadian Reconnaissance Regiment. He was stationed at numerous places in England and was wounded on active duty around 1944. Stanley returned to Canada and was discharged in January 1945 in Winnipeg. With May, his war bride of 1942, he visited his brother Bill’s grave in Dieppe, France in 1971. Stanley was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branches in Winnipeg, MB and Quesnel and Chilliwack, BC from 1945 to1993, the year Stanley died in Quesnel. OAKDEN, Charles WWII Charles was born in Boissevain, Manitoba in 1919. He joined the 2nd Battalion Winnipeg Rifles on October 9, 1940 and trained there. On March 10, 1941, he joined the Royal Canadian Artillery and served for forty months as a Regimental Signaler in the UK and Continental Europe. While overseas, he was involved in the defense of Great Britain during the “Blitz” and was in Holland, France and Germany during the invasion of Europe. He was discharged on October 17, 1945. Charles received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the 1939-45 Star, the Defence Medal and the France and Germany Star. He was a member of Boissevain Legion Branch 10 before he passed away in 1982.
