167 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca PETTYPIECE, Charles R. WWII Charles was born in 1908 in Amherstburg, Essex County, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army and served with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps in Canada, Holland, France, and Great Britain during World War II. He was a member of Boissevain Legion Branch 10 for thirty-nine years. Charles died in 1997. PHILLIPS, Horace J. WWII Horace was born in 1917 in Findlay, Manitoba. On March 17, 1941, he enlisted with the Royal Canadian Artillery in Winnipeg. He was then stationed in Brandon, Manitoba and trained as a Gunner with the Army’s 26th Battalion. Horace was sent overseas in 1942 and was one of many captured in the raid at Dieppe, France on August 19 of that year. From there, he marched to Germany where he remained a POW until he was released in 1945. Horace received a POW Medal for his ordeal. He was a member of St. James Legion Branch 4 and Souris Legion Branch 60 for a total of 25 years and he died in 1977. PIERSON, Willis A. PEACETIME Willis was born in 1930 in the Rural Municipality of Rosedale, Manitoba. He joined the Army and served in Canada with the 12th Manitoba Dragoons. Willis has been a member of Boissevain Legion Branch 10 for forty-five years. PIERCE, Douglas Llewellyn “Doug” WWII Doug was born in Indian Head, Saskatchewan in 1918. He enrolled in the non-permanent active militia of Canada on October 9, 1940, was ranked as a Sergeant, and served with the 2nd Battalion, Royal Winnipeg Rifles as a Driver Mechanic, Group C. Doug married Catherine O’Brien on April 14, 1945 in Brighton, England and they moved back to Pipestone, Manitoba where they farmed for 18 years and raised three children. They moved to Brandon, Manitoba where he was employed by the government for Man-Power for nearly a year, then took a job as a Government Agriculture Products Inspector for Pool Packers until 1969 when he moved to Neepawa as Primary Products Inspector at the processors’ poultry plant. Doug was one of the key figures in promoting The South West Manitoba Feeder Sales in Pipestone and was its secretary treasurer until 1964. A member of Pipestone Legion Branch 230, Doug passed away at work in Neepawa on August 9, 1971 at fifty-three.
