111 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca LUMB, Rowland F. “Rollie” WWII Rollie was born in Cartwright, Manitoba in 1916. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force at No. 8 Depot in Winnipeg where he served as a saxophone player with the Brass-Reed Military Band from 1941-45. The band played rousing music at train stations, concert halls, church services, parades, funerals and dances. Roland’s part in the war effort was to inspire and encourage through music, especially new recruits as they were shipped out, and welcoming wounded and returning soldiers. To avoid mistakes, the bandmaster required that all musicians clip their music to their instruments for parades but Rollie didn’t need to do this as he didn’t make mistakes. He was invited to be part of a specialized orchestra that played concerts in theatres for the troops and visiting dignitaries. Rollie was a member of Morden Legion Branch 11 as well as Saanich Peninsula Legion Branch 37 for a total of thirty years before he passed away in 1993. LUXTON, Wallace A. “Walley” KOREA Walley was born in Nakina, Ontario on November 21, 1928. He was the third child born into a family of eight children (four boys and four girls). His father, a machinist for the C.N.R., was transferred in 1938 to Kindersley, Saskatchewan where they lived for two years, and then were transferred back to Nakina. Walley was 10 years old at the time. He enjoyed hunting and fishing when he was a young boy and in his teens, and later when he left school, he went to work for the C.N.R. with his father. Around 1950, he left Nakina for Toronto where he joined the Army and within a short time, was sent to Korea. He was serving with the Royal Canadian Regiment when he was killed in Korea in 1952. Walley was a member of Robert Frost Legion Branch 133. LYNCH, Arthur Clarence WWII & KOREA Arthur was born on July 5, 1925 in the Parish of Poplar Point, Manitoba. He was underage when he joined the Army to fight in World War II. While with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders, he served in Canada and the United Kingdom, participating in the liberation of Holland, at Groningen and other cities, as well as in some areas of Germany. He also served with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in the Korean War where he recovered Henry Lavallée, son of Vic Lavallée, now buried in Korea. His medals are displayed in Fort la Reine Military Museum in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. Arthur has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion for 50 years. LYLYK, William “Bill” WWII Bill was born in Pine River, Manitoba in December 1922. He enlisted in the Royal Winnipeg Rifles on May 21, 1943 and served in Canada, England, and Continental Europe. He landed in France in June 1944 and was captured in Normandy, spending the rest of the war as a POW. He was discharged at the end of 1945 after which he bought a farm which he worked until he died in 1995. Bill was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star and the War Medal 1939-45.
