85 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca JAMES, John E. “Jim” WWII Jim was born in Broad Valley, Manitoba in 1922. He joined the Army and served with the Winnipeg Grenadiers in Hong Kong where he was a POW from 1941-1945. Jim was injured on December 24, 1941 and his left leg was amputated below the knee. Since he couldn’t do heavy labour, his rations were cut by half. After 3 years there, he received a Canadian Red Cross parcel containing candy, cigarettes and tobacco which he traded for food from Chinese workers at the prison camp. Jim worked for the camp doctor, keeping track of patients and how they were treated. He recorded that eighty-one prisoners had died. Once released, he boarded “The Prince Robert” for Manila where he met his wife, Marcine Hefner. They settled in Winnipeg for 5 years then moved to Emo, Ontario where they lived with their 4 children. John was a member of General Lipsett Legion Branch 99 for fifty years and he died in 2005. JANZ, Edwin J. WWII Edwin was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1919. He joined the Army and served in Canada and Britain during World War II. He was awarded the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and the War Medal 1939-45. Edwin was a member of Souris Legion Branch 60 for forty-two years before he passed away in 1989. JENKINS, David A. “Dave” KOREA & PEACETIME Dave was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on August 12, 1930. As members of his family had served in both World Wars, Dave first joined the Militia then served with the Winnipeg Grenadiers from 1946-49. From 1950, he was with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders (QOCH) of Canada for 8 months until he enlisted with the Canadian Army on September 28. Private Jenkins was a member of the 1st Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry from 1950-53, seeing front line service in Korea. Dave received the Commonwealth Korea Service Medal, the UN Service Medal and Canada’s Korea War Medal. He served again with the QOCH of C from 1956-58. While in the military, Dave served in Canada, Korea and Japan. He was a proud and active Member of Elmwood Legion Branch 9 for forty-three years, holding offices at District, Zone and Branch Levels. He passed away on February 14, 1995 at the age of 64. JAY, E. L. “Eddie” WWI Eddie was born in Hartney, Manitoba. He joined the 27th Battalion of the Canadian Army Service Corps and served in France at the Lens Front and Amiens during World War I. No additional information is available.
