37 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca DUPONT, Dennis R. PEACETIME Dennis was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1939. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force at Fort Williams, Ontario and took military training in St. Jean, QC and Camp Borden, ON before going to his first posting in Grostenquin, France with the 430 Squadron. Transferred to Winnipeg in 1961, he went on to ANS Portage la Prairie, then TACAN Mod party in 1963 and Winnipeg in 1964 for wing maintenance. Dennis then served at Lahr, Germany 109 KU in 1968 as a Tech crewman on Dakota aircraft and ferried the last CAF Piston aircraft from Germany to Saskatoon in April 1971 via Scotland, Iceland, Greenland and the Arctic. He transferred to Portage then Winnipeg and Portage again in 1988 until the base closed in 1992. He served 36 years then was 3 years with the Reserves. Dennis has been a member of Portage la Prairie Legion Branch 65 for thirty-four years. He was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration with two Bars and the Canadian Service Medal (NATO) 1958-1961 and 1968-1971. EARL, Harold D. WWII Harold was born in Morris, Manitoba on March 5, 1921. He took a mechanic’s course in Winnipeg before joining the Royal Canadian Air Force on February 25, 1942 and going to Brandon, Manitoba. He was then sent to Gander, Newfoundland where he served with 5BR Squadron, doing convoy patrol along the East Coast, as far as the USA. He then trained to be a pilot but was discharged on March 13, 1945. Harold returned to his home town and farmed with his Dad. He married Verna in 1949 and he was a member of Morris Legion Branch 111 for more than fifty years. Harold died on November 6, 2000. ELLIOT, John T. WWII John was born in Margaret, Manitoba in 1922. He joined the Army and served with the 4th Anti-Tank, 5th Division in Canada, England, North Africa, Italy, France, Holland, Belgium and Germany. He suffered post-traumatic stress syndrome as a result of being in a tank in Italy that took a direct hit. John was a member of Boissevain Legion Branch 10 for thirty years. EKIN, Ivan WWII Ivan was born in Boissevain, Manitoba on October 15, 1923. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in the fall of 1941 and served as a Leading Aircraftman with 407 Squadron in Canada and England. Sent initially to St. Thomas, ON and Dauphin, MB, he was then posted to England, Scotland and Ireland in March 1943. His main job was wiring bombs and repairing airplanes that had been shot up. He returned home at harvest time in September 1945. Ivan was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion and he passed away in Vancouver, British Columbia on September 5, 2007.
