55 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca GOULDIE, Leonard McMillan WWII Leonard was born in Bowsman, Manitoba in 1921. He was employed as a farmhand until 1941, when he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Artillery. He went on to serve in the United Kingdom, Central Mediterranean Area and Continental Europe from 1941-1945. After his return from overseas, on January 3, 1946, he married Eva Patterson, farmed for eleven years and had five children. Leonard died in 1966 in a road accident north of Boissevain, Manitoba. GOULDIE, Merton Donald Galbraith “Mert” WWI Mert was born in Minden, Muskoka, Ontario on March 8, 1877 but the family moved to Killarney, Manitoba in 1886 where his father built and operated the first hotel. Five years later, they sold the hotel and took a farm at Dunrea, MB as part payment. On December 25, 1901, Mert married Maude Farrow from Desford and in 1903, bought his father’s farm, resold it in 1908 and went west where he worked at “freighting” with horses, ahead of the Grand Trunk Railway that was being built through the Rocky Mountains. In 1914, he enlisted with the 222nd Regiment but was transferred to another outfit when he got to England. He fought in France and Germany and was discharged in 1918. His wife and children spent the war years living on her father’s farm. Mert died in 1962. GRIFFIN, William Allen A. WWII William was born in Darlingford, Manitoba in 1922. He joined the Army and served in Manitoba during World War II. When William passed away in January 2005, he had been a member of Manitou Legion Branch 21 for ten years. GRAINGER, Terence T. W. WWII Terence was born in Souris, Manitoba in 1921. He joined the Army and served with the Royal Canadian Heavy Artillery in Victoria and in the Prince Rupert surrounding area. He was a member of Boissevain Legion Branch 10 for forty-five years.
