39 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca ELLISON, Wilfred J. “Duffy” WWII Duffy was born in 1924 in the East Mountain District of Manitoba. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, graduated from HMCS Chippawa with the Torpedo Rating 9, then went on to serve on the High Seas with HMCS Stadacona. Duffy was a member of Cartwright-Mather Legion Branch 86 for thirty-seven years before he passed away in 1983. ENGBRECHT, Peter WWII & SPECIAL DUTY AREA Peter was born in Poltavka, Russia on January 27, 1923. He served with 427 Squadron, No. 6 Bomber Group of the Royal Canadian Air Force in Canada and Great Britain. He was an upper-turret Lancaster bomber gunner who held the distinction of being the only RCAF ace who wasn’t a fighter pilot. Journalists called him “Canada’s top air gunner” and King George VI presented Peter with the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal. Peter was a Flying Officer when he left the service in 1945 but he re-enlisted three years later and served thirty-five years as RCAF radar technician in various northern communities. Upon retiring in 1973, Peter was the longest serving NORAD serviceman. He died on April 23, 1991. FARMER, Clayton Alfred WWII Clayton was born in Sault Ste Marie on July 13, 1921 and enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force as an Air Gunner in 1941. He took basic training at the Toronto Manning Depot and the Bombing/Gunnery School at MacDonald, Manitoba, followed by gunnery school in Wales and operational training school in Shropshire, England. He served as a Flying Officer with No.100 and No.12 Lancaster Squadrons. Any one of Clayton’s 32 air operations flown over enemy territory may have been the reason for his being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Commonwealth’s highest award. He remains quiet on the subject. Clayton met and married Margaret Bulmer in England who, with their tiny daughter, joined him in Pine Falls where their son was born. Clayton and Margaret led a quiet life, happy with their children, grandchildren and contented in retirement. Clayton is a member of Pine Falls Legion Branch 64. EPP, Jack J. WWII Jack was born in Russia in 1919. He joined the Army and served with the Royal Canadian Infantry Corps in the Aleutian Islands, Canada, Britain, and Northwest Europe. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and the War Medal 1939-45. Jack passed away in 1982.
