He enlisted in the Army in Portage la Prairie, trained in Winnipeg, and then was stationed at Debert, Nova Scotia. He served in Canada with the 1st Division of the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps and while in England, was under frequent attack from night flying German bombers. There was a Mustard Gas incident where two people died and John was accidently poisoned. He was hospitalized, returned to Canada on a Red Cross ship, was attended to at King George Hospital in Winnipeg, after which the Military listed his condition as tuberculosis. Discharged after two years, his attempts to get medical assistance were refused. The Government stated his problem was related to health and not to his time in the Military. John died in 2003. HOURIE, Philip WWII Philip was born in High Bluff, Manitoba on December 23, 1919. He joined the Army in Winnipeg on December 23, 1941, trained at Camp Shilo and went overseas on the Louis Pasteur. Serving with the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, he did familiarization training at Aldershot, England then was shipped to Sicily and Italy where he saw action at Ortono. He then went to Europe where he served through France, Belgium and Holland. Philip was discharged at the Osborne Barracks in Winnipeg on November 15, 1945. He has been a member of Portage la Prairie Legion Branch 65 since 1948. HUGHES, Victor W. KOREA & PEACETIME Victor was born on January 14, 1929 to Wallace and Ivy Hughes of Rainy River, Ontario. He attended school there and as a young man, called crews for the C.N.R. In April 1948, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy in Esquimalt, BC and served in Canada, Korea and in the Far East on HMCS Ontario and Crescent. During the Korean Conflict, as a gun layer on the Destroyer HMCS Sioux, he was awarded the Korean and UN Service Medals. Victor was honourably discharged in April 1953 and he married Helen Hrynyk in 1954. He worked for the C.N.R. until 1962 when he became employed with Revenue Canada as customs inspector in Fort Frances, retiring in 1990. He was a member of Rainy River/Fort Frances Legion Branch 29 for fifty-one years. Victor passed away on January 25, 2001. HOWELL, Brant WWII Brant was born in Boissevain, Manitoba in 1915. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as a pilot in England during World War II. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his success in sinking German U-Boats and by the time he was discharged, Brant had attained the rank of Wing Commander. After the war, he went on to get his Mechanical Engineering degree. Brant died in 1997 in Victoria where he had lived in retirement.
