47 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca GARRIOCH, Bennett Campbell WWII Bennett was born in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba in 1923. He enlisted for WWII in June 1940 in Winnipeg, MB and was discharged in November 1945 in Vancouver, BC. He served in Canada, the United Kingdom, the Central Mediterranean Area (Italy), and Continental Europe with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, the Regina Rifle Regiment and the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada. Bennett was awarded the George V Medal, the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Italy Star, the Defence Medal, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. He also received a letter of Commendation from Field Marshall Montgomery where he states, “Stepped up to the plate and did his duty.” Bennett was a member of Portage la Prairie Legion Branch 65 before he died in 1987. GARRIOCH, David V. WWII David was born in 1921 in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. He joined the Army in Brandon in 1939, trained at Camp Shilo, and then went on to Petawawa, Ontario for further training in the 26th Field Regiment. He received his Commission and served as an Instructor in the Royal Canadian Artillery in Canada, the United Kingdom and Europe. He wound up in the same area his father had occupied in WWI and at one point during his service, met up with his younger brother, Bennett. David married and settled down in England. He was a member of Portage la Prairie Legion Branch 65 before he died in 2007. GARTON, William Maris WWII William was born in Boissevain, Manitoba in 1920. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as Major General in Canada and Britain with 220 RAF, and 407 RCAF (Demon) Squadrons as Commander of Air Defence Command. After the war, he became president of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers’ Association of Canada. William passed away in 1996. GARRIOCH (nee SCHNIEDER), Isabella C. WWII Isabella was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1918 and died in 1998. During World War II, she served in Canada with the Women’s Division of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Isabella was a member of Fort Garry Legion Branch 90 for 29 years.
