27 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca CATHRO, Thomas C. “Tom” KOREA, SPECIAL DUTY AREA & PEACETIME Tom was born in North Battleford, Saskatchewan in 1928. He joined the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry and in 1953, served as a Sergeant in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He took the Jump Para Course at Camp Borden, Ontario and Calgary, Alberta and served in Canada, Korea, Germany, and Egypt. He retired from the Forces in 1978.Tom has seven medals, three for Korea, one for Egypt, Germany and NATO, as well as the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the Canadian Forces Decoration. Tom married Carleen Newsham on September 17, 1955 and they had five children. He has been a member of Foxwarren Legion Branch 152 for thirty-five years, served as President for ten years, and also belonged to the Korean War Veteran Winnipeg. CHUBEY, Harry WWII Harry was born in Carlowrie, Manitoba in 1926. He joined the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps and served as a Trooper (Lance) Corporal in Canada at Camp Borden. He often spoke of enjoying his Army Service days when he worked in the kitchen and later served at the Officers’ tables. His troop, scheduled to sail overseas, was quarantined due to an outbreak of mumps but the war was over when the quarantine expired. He was awarded the War Medal 1939-45 and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. Having a deep respect for the Legion, Harry was primarily responsible with the committee members for organizing the ten churches in The Ukrainian Parish District of Vita in holding a Remembrance Day Service and Memorial Service on November 11. This is still continued, followed by a lunch and a program in which the youth participate. Harry, who died in 1996, was a member of Dominion City Legion Branch 160 for fifteen years. CHUBEY, Paul WWII Paul was born in Carlowrie, Manitoba in 1924. He joined the Army and served with the Kent Regiment, St. John Fusiliers and the Royal Winnipeg Rifles in Canada and the United Kingdom during World War II. Paul, the only one of the four brothers to serve overseas, was wounded in one of the battles in Europe and he was very reluctant to talk about what happened after he returned from the war. He was awarded the War Medal 1939-45 and the France and Germany Star. Paul was a member of Roseau Valley Legion Branch 160 for twenty-four years and he died in 1989. CHUBEY, Jack WWII Jack was born on May 27, 1919 in Rosa, Manitoba and enlisted in Winnipeg on February 19, 1942. He joined the Winnipeg Grenadiers (Royal Canadian Army Service Corps) at Victoria, British Columbia on April 23, 1944 and served as a regimental army cook in the United Kingdom-North Pacific area until the end of the war. He received a Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. Jack was a member of Roseau Valley Legion Branch 160 for twentysix years and he passed away of an illness in 1971.
