He joined the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada and the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada. He served in Canada, Britain and Northwest Europe and was killed in action in Calvados, France on August 10, 1944. Alfred was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, and the War Medal 1939-45. He is buried in Plot 12, Row 6, Grave 12 in Bretteville-sur-Laize, France. HAMILTON, George Gordon SPECIAL DUTY AREA George was born in Boissevain, Manitoba on December 14, 1943. He joined the Army and served with the Princess Patricia’s Light Infantry and Airborne Medical of the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps in Canada, Germany and Norway. George was in the Canadian Armed Forces for twenty-nine years. HAMILTON, Robert J. WWII Robert was born in Vanguard, Saskatchewan on May 29, 1917. He enlisted in the Army on March 23, 1942 and served as a 2nd Division Signalman in Canada, Britain and Northwest Europe. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and the War Medal 1939-45. He returned to Canada on January 11, 1946 and in 1951, married Florence Clark with whom he had 7 children. Robert held a number of different jobs through the years while running a small farm in the Lake Max area and he retired from maintaining the International Peace Garden in 1982. Robert was a member of Boissevain Legion Branch 10 for fifty-seven years and he passed away in 2003. HAMILTON, John Hedley “Jack” WWII Jack was born in Brandon, Manitoba in 1922. He enlisted in the Royal Winnipeg Rifles (RWR) in Winnipeg in October 1942 and trained at Fort Osborne. He then joined the 3rd Battalion of the RWR before sailing to England in August 1943. On D-Day on June 6, 1944, Jack was at Juno Beach in Normandy where he was wounded in the face by shrapnel. Less than a month later at Carpiquet Airport, he sustained additional wounds to his upper right arm, nose and right eye. After his discharge, Jack returned to Brandon and married Isabel Watson in 1951 and they raised two children. He joined the Pipestone Legion Branch in 1941 and transferred to Brandon Legion Branch 3 in 1951. Jack has been a Legion member for 61 years and has received many awards, including the Palm Leaf and the Meritorious Medal, the highest Legion award that can be granted.
