In the fall of 1942, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in Brandon, Manitoba and did his training there. In 1943, he was deployed with the Mechanical Transport Division of the No. 1 Canadian Central Ordnance Service to southern England. It was on a leave during this time that he met his future wife, Helen, in Aberdeen, Scotland. They were married in 1944 and in 1945, returned to his home in Mather, Manitoba where he took up farming. He was awarded the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, and the Imperial George IVS G.BR. OMN REXETINDIAE. Elgin was a member of Cartwright-Mather Legion Branch 86 for more than fifty years, as well as a Past President. He passed away in 1997 at the age of 78. MILLER, Norman E. WWII Norman was born in 1917 in East St. Paul in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He joined the Army and served as a Gunner on the front lines in France and Holland. He was awarded the War Medal 1939-45, the France and Germany Star, the 1939-45 Star, the Defence Medal, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. Norman was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion for thirty years before he passed away in 2004. MILLIKEN, James R. “Jim” WWII Jim was born in Reston, Manitoba in 1920. He enlisted in the Army in October 1941 and served as a Gunner with the 1st Canadian Division, 19th Battery, 3rd Field Regiment in Italy, France, Holland, and Belgium from October 1941-45. Following his discharge in 1945, he returned to Reston where he pursued a farming career, married and raised a family. Jim was a member of Reston Legion Branch 106 for forty-three years and he died in 1988. MILLER, Orval R. WWII Orval was born in 1920 in Arborfield, Saskatchewan. In May 1942, he enlisted in the Army in Winnipeg, Manitoba and served with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps in England, France, Belgium and Holland. He received his discharge while in England in July 1946 and also married Edna Vesty before returning to Canada in 1947. Orval and Edna moved to Snow Lake in 1960 and raised two sons in the small community. He was a Life member of Arborfield Legion Branch 203. Orval, who is now 90, resides in Arborfield, SK, the community he was born and raised in.
