He joined the Army and the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in Canada with the Military Police. He was a member of Boissevain Legion Branch 10 for thirty-five years. James died in 1984. NEILL, Bernice Doreen WWII Bernice was born in 1921 in Dauphin, Manitoba, where she received her education. Before joining the Navy, she was employed in a local restaurant. She joined the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service in 1942 and served as a Leading Wren in locales in Eastern Canada and in Newfoundland where she was on VE Day. Bernice was the only Permanent WREN to be invited to march in the parade in London, England, for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. Bernice and her husband, Arthur McIntyre, raised two sons and one daughter. After being discharged from the Navy, Bernice owned and managed a corner store in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where she still resides. She has been a member of Somme-Dartmouth Legion Branch 31 for eight years. NOBLE, Aylmer R. WWII Aylmer was born in Boissevain, Manitoba in 1913. He joined the Army and served in Telecommunications in Canada during World War II. He was a member of Brandon Legion Branch 3 for fifty years. Aylmer died in 2007. NICOLSON, Donald A. “Don” WWII & PEACETIME Don was born in Birtle, Manitoba in 1921. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in December 1940, did his flight training, then went overseas with 609 Squadron before being seconded to the RAAF’s (Australia) 450 Squadron “Desert Harassers” in January 1942. Don mainly flew Kittyhawks and was made a member of the Boomerang Club upon returning to his unit after being forced down in the desert in North Africa. He also served in Italy before returning to Canada at the end of 1944 and marrying Norma Stowe in April of that year. Retired from active service in 1945, Don re-enlisted in 1952, trained as a helicopter pilot and had a varied career building the DEW Line, sounding rapids for the St. Lawrence Seaway, recovering drones for CEPE and flying Search and Rescue missions. He retired from the RCAF in 1964 and died in January 2006 in Moorhead, Minnesota, USA.
