33 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca DEAN, Jack T. WWII Jack was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1918. He enlisted as an Engine Room Artificer in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve on February 28, 1942. On posting to Halifax in July 1942, he was assigned to HMCS Preserver and served in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Strait of Belle Isle, Newfoundland. He was posted to Newfoundland in 1944 and later in 1945, was transferred to HMCS Battleford K-165 which operated in the North Atlantic. He was discharged in September 1945 at the end of hostilities. Like his brother, George, Jack played for the Pine Falls Rovers in baseball and hockey. He loved the outdoors and his many canoe trips with his friend, Barney Campbell. In later years, he excelled at golf and competed in many provincial and local tournaments. Jack passed away on June 7, 1983 and was a member of Pine Falls Legion Branch 64. De BACKER, Edmund J. KOREA Edmund was born in Deloraine, Manitoba in 1918. He joined the 1st Garrison Battalion, Niagara-on-the Lake in 1943 and served in Canada during the Korean War. Edmund passed away in 2004. DENNEY, Russel M. WWII & KOREA Russel was born in 1923. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served on the High Seas, in the North Atlantic, and in England during the Second World War. He also served during the Korean War. Russel was a member of Saskatchewan’s Flaxcombe Legion Branch 98 for fifty years. Russel died in 2003. DEGLEMAN, Leopold WWII Leopold was born in 1924 in Winnipeg. Manitoba. He joined the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve and served on HMCS Naden and HMCS Royal Mount in Newfoundland and in the Atlantic Zone. Leopold has been a member of Fort Garry Legion Branch 90 and Transcona Legion Branch 07 for 29 years.
