He joined the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps, 3rd Division Headquarters, and served from 1940-46, four years of which were spent in England, The Netherlands, France, Belgium, Scotland and Germany. As a member of the transportation unit, he drove a three-ton water truck, mail truck, and various other vehicles for the transport of officers. Whenever water was the cargo, the water needed to be purified before it could be used. The Dutch people were very hospitable to the Canadian troops and ‘leave’ time there and in Scotland were very pleasant. Friendships were very special and the experiences never to be forgotten. At 91, Cecil resides in Souris, MB in the Victoria Park Lodge. RUDD, Eric W. WWII Eric was born in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba in 1918. He joined the Army and served in Europe during World War II with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. Eric was a member of Roland Legion Branch 48 for twenty-two years before he died in 1982. RYLES (nee MEADOWS), Alixe A. WWI Alixe was born in Odanah, Manitoba in 1920. She enlisted with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (RCEME) in Toronto and served in Victoria, British Columbia during World War II. Alixe remembers when she and a friend arrived at the Royal Canadian Women's Army Corps (CWAC) camp for basic training and the officers there realized they had two recruits with college degrees. They wanted them singled out for Officer’s training. But RCEME said, “No way, we recruited these gals.” Alixe and her friend agreed, as they had signed up to be Instrument Mechanics. After several courses, Alixe serviced the Sperry Predictors that directed the Anti-aircraft Guns at the military camps on BC’s west coast. Between VE and VJ Day, she returned to Toronto and ended her career as Assistant Quarter-Master at CWAC Headquarters. RYAN, Jay F. WWII Jay was born in Ninga, Manitoba in 1919. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as a mechanic in Canada. Jay was a member of Boissevain Legion Branch 10 for forty-eight years before he died in 1996.
